Newcastle are holding out for £45m for captain Jamaal Lascelles, according to the Evening Standard.

Reporter Simon Johnson says that both us and Chelsea are keen on signing the centre-back, while Everton are also interested in the player.

The Merseyside club look set to make the first move for the defender with a £30m bid reportedly being prepared. However, it seems the Magpies are looking for £15m more.

Lascelles is not the only centre-back we are looking at. Ajax’s Matthijs De Ligt is still very much in club’s thoughts.

We are likely holding fire on any offers for a centre-back until Toby Alderweireld’s future is resolved. The 29-year-old told a Belgian newspaper at the weekend that his future is in the club’s hands.

Our no.4 has been heavily linked with a switch to Manchester United and the Daily Telegraph reports that they will turn their attention to signing the defender following the capture of Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk. The story says we have set our asking price at £55m.

  • Sorry Geordie, but if Lascelles is worth 45m, then Alderweiereld would be nearer the 200m Mark which is fantasy transfer land. Alderweireld is one of the very best centre backs in the world – just pay him and tie him down for another 5 years: it’s his last big contract at 29!

  • It’s a difficult one – keep Toby or go for De Ligt. Top class and understanding/partnership with Verts or the future with Sanchez and Foyth. Cannot honestly decide, if we could afford it – keep Toby and sign De Ligt and loan back for a year or two lol! Not sure about the likes of Lascelles and Mawson – the fact is Ajax pedigree CB’s tend to be pure class and we should know – Verts, Toby and Davy. De Ligt is their youngest captain ever which is some accolade so if Toby does go for me it has to be De Ligt – saw him against Portugal and was pure class – 3-0 victory with 2 assists on top.
