According to Marca (h/t Sport Witness), Tottenham are interested in Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio, with Mauricio Pochettino reportedly a big fan of the Spaniard and having made an approach to sign him. Asensio is believed to have reaffirmed his desire to stay at Real, however, and has no plans to exit the Santiago Bernabéu in January.
It’s hard to believe such a story is true, as the 22-year-old’s valuation is £79m – considerably more than Tottenham would spend on one player. The Londoners recently build a new stadium and failed to make a permanent signing in the summer transfer window, so why would they spend so much money on Asensio in January – he also plays in a position that Pochettino is overstocked in.
Spurs have Christian Eriksen, Heung-min Son, Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou who can play in Asensio’s position, so the London outfit are better off sticking with what they have. Pochettino has a greater need to strengthen centre-midfield with Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele currently sidelined with injury and having an uncertain future at the club.
Asensio isn’t a priority signing, especially for nearly £80m, and Real aren’t even looking to sell him so don’t read too much into this one.
