Tottenham will not make £44m transfer decision to help Harry Kane – opinion

|

Despite Tottenham being overstocked with attackers, the Londoners are being linked with a move for Celta Vigo striker Maximiliano Gómez. According to El Pais (h/t Sport Witness), Spurs are interested in the Uruguayan international, potentially as a secondary option to Harry Kane.

The 22-year-old has been in fine form in La Liga this season and is has a CIES value of £44m reflecting his progress. Kane is Tottenham’s undisputed first-choice in attack, so Gomez would be brought in to shoulder some of the scoring burden, in addition to providing competition to keep Kane’s performance levels high.

It seems unlikely, however, and here’s why. Firstly, the notion that Spurs of all teams would sign a £44m-rated striker that isn’t guaranteed first-team football is ridiculous. That’s not to say Gomez isn’t talented, however….

He scored 19 goals in 36 Liga games last season and has six in 10 this campaign. Signing him makes little sense if Kane will remain first-choice, and the England international isn’t going to be dropped any time soon (10 goals in 16 games in all comps this season).

Finally, Mauricio Pochettino has enough options in attack this season – Fernando Llorente, Vincent Janssen and Heung-min Son can all play up front in Kane’s absence. It isn’t perfect but it’s unlikely that Spurs will ship one existing player out and bring a new face in if their first-choice is fit.
