Tottenham eye £40m transfer for winger with more dribbles than Heung-min Son

|

Tottenham are looking to strengthen at right-back, centre-back, midfield and in attack this summer, but it appears we’re also on the hunt for a wide-man.

Despite having Erik Lamela, Lucas Moura, Steven Bergwijn and Heung-min Son at our disposal, the Sunday Mirror say Ismaila Sarr is on our radar. He won’t come cheap, however, so we may need to sell to buy as the Covid-19 pandemic played havoc with our finances.

How much will he cost?

The Sun say Sarr’s asking price is £40m, but Watford may have to lower their valuation of the winger if suitors don’t match it. The Hornets offered Sarr out to a number of sides this summer as they need money to ease their financial woes, but it remains to be seen who will bite.

Crystal Palace and Liverpool are among the clubs interested in Sarr, so we may have our work cut out landing the wide-man. Watford haven’t sold us a player post-millennium, but we have sent them eight players in the past so the club relationship should be strong. That may give us an advantage in negotiations.

Would he improve the squad?

In short, yes. Sarr joined Watford from Stade Rennais for £27m last summer and has gone on to make 30 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals with six assists. He’s contributed a goal against Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United too.

As per WhoScored, the Senegalese international made 28 Premier League appearances, created 25 chances, made 47 successful dribbles, whipped in 99 crosses with 18% finding a teammate, won 47 free-kicks, made 18 interceptions and made 11 tackles.

With more chances created (1 per 81.2 minutes) than Harry Kane (1 per 95.9 minutes) and more attempted dribbles (1 per 21.1 minutes) than Heung-min Son (1 per 23.2 minutes), Sarr could be an asset.

Summary

Sarr isn’t cheap, but he looks a good player. The 22-year-old has all the attributes to be an effective wide-man and is coming off the back of an impressive debut season in the Premier League. We have alternate options on our wishlist in Said Benrahma, Leon Bailey, Ryan Fraser and Luiz Diaz, but Sarr may be worth a punt.
