Spurs target 7-goal sensation who Pochettino once tipped to become a “top player” – report

|

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in bringing back one of their former players to north London this summer.

According to Desportivo de Guimaraes, via Record, Spurs are keen on Vitoria winger Marcus Edwards, nearly a year after he left the club on a free transfer.

It’s claimed that his performances in Portugal haven’t gone ‘unnoticed’ and that he is destined to return to his homeland in the future.

Was Marcus Edwards let go too soon?

No way

The 21-year-old has been in emphatic form this campaign, providing seven goals and seven assists in 30 appearances in all competitions, which includes a goal against arch-rivals Arsenal in the Europa League, via Transfermarkt.

If Jose Mourinho does indeed hold interest in the Spurs academy graduate, then it could cost him as much as €25m (£22.6m), but if he were to join another team, then we’d be entitled to a whopping 50% of what the Primeira Liga side make.

Nice work, Mr Levy.

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

It would certainly be an interesting turn of events as the forward struggled to break into the senior setup under Mauricio Pochettino, even though the former Spurs boss waxed lyrical about him publicly.

Edwards earned a huge comparison to Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi, Pochettino told the Guardian:

“His qualities … it’s only looks – his body and the way that he plays – remember a little bit from the beginning of Messi,” before adding: “He is a very good prospect and, potentially, he can be a top player but we need to be patient and tell him that he has a lot of talent, enough talent to be a top player, a great player, but now it’s how he builds his future – that’s very important.”

It remains to be seen whether Edwards will get another chance at Spurs, especially given the wealth of riches Mourinho possesses in the attacking department.
