Heung-min Son injury update ahead of Manchester United clash

|

Heung-min Son is an injury doubt for Tottenham ahead of Sunday’s trip to face Manchester United, the club confirmed on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old picked up a hamstring injury in our 1-1 draw with Newcastle United on Tuesday and was withdrawn midway through the game.

Son missed our EFL Cup win over Chelsea on Tuesday and our Europa League win over Maccabi Haifa on Thursday, but he should return later this month.

What has Jose Mourinho said about Son?

Mourinho said: “Sonny, of course, is not playing (against Maccabi Haifa). He’s a doubt for Sunday (Manchester United), I would say a big doubt, but I don’t want to say that he’s not going to play, because maybe he does, and then my position is not good!”

Son could miss Sunday’s league game, but he should be back after the international break. After Man Utd, we’ll face West Ham United on October 17, so that gives him plenty of time to recover.

The South Korean international has made five appearances in all competitions this campaign, scoring five goals with two assists. Son bagged 18 goals and made 12 assists in 41 games last season and is picking up where he left off.

It’s unfortunate we don’t have Gareth Bale fit while Son is out, but the pair should return later this month. We’re coming off the back of four wins and two draws from six games too, so things are looking up.

How will we line up when everyone is fit?

Despite Erik Lamela impressing in the EFL Cup this week while Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura contributed goals in the Europa League, I can see Mourinho opting for a front three of Son, Harry Kane and Bale when everyone is fit.

In midfield, he’s likely to opt for Giovani Lo Celso, Harry Winks and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. It’s clear Mourinho doesn’t trust Tanguy Ndombele or Moussa Sissoko in the middle of the park, so the pair might have to be patient for opportunities.

In defence, Sergio Reguilon will be pushing for a start at left-back. Matt Doherty should start on the right despite his form as Serge Aurier is surplus to requirements. Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez could partner one another at centre-back, although Toby Alderweireld and Japhet Tanganga should be given opportunities too.

Hugo Lloris’ position in goal looks safe for now.
