Tottenham defender set to return in time for World Cup

|

It has been reported by GiveMeSport, that Spurs defender Christian Romero will play for Argentina in the forthcoming Qatar World Cup – despite previous concerns that he may not return from injury in time.

Speaking to GiveMeSport injury expert Ben Dinnery , stated that Romero “should be absolutely fine” despite his recent hamstring problems.

Romero’s injury has meant he has had to sit out Tottenham’s last five fixtures, with his last appearance coming back in late October, in a 1-1 draw with Sporting Lisbon.

Some sections of the Spurs fanbase had questioned the validity of Romero’s absence, with some accusing the player of resting himself ahead of the World Cup.

However, with Romero missing Argentina’s recent friendly with the UAE on Wednesday, it seems these accusations are un-found.

Dinnery:

“So, with regards to Cristian Romero, although there are no guarantees, my understanding is that his muscle problem is fairly short term.

“He should be fine in terms of where he is with regards to that muscle injury, although the consideration will then come for a player who hasn’t played for a month, or maybe even beyond that if it goes to that second or third group game.

“But as it currently stands in terms of the actual injury itself, he should be absolutely fine. Like I said, the other factors to consider would be a decision to make maybe closer to the time, but he’s well on his way to recovering from that.”

When it comes down to Romero and his sides chances, many fans tip them to do well in Qatar, with the bookies currently having Argentina as second favourites to bring home to the trophy.

The Spurs man will be key if his side have any chance of securing World Cup glory. With Argentina receiving criticism in recent World Cups for being too top-heavy – with their abundance of attacking talent having to mask their defensive frailties

However, this simply is not the case anymore with Cristian Romero set to line-up beside Manchester United centre half Lisandro Martinez – who has impressed ever since arriving in Manchester. The two Premier League stars will likely be flanked by the solid Gonzalo Montiel and Marcos Acuna – meaning Argentina have a good, solid base to build their side from.

Lionel Scaloni’s men kick off their campaign against Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, hoping to replicate their World Cup heroics of 1978 and 1986.

Spurs fans, what do you make of Argentina’s chances in Qatar?

This is as close to a WC thread as we have right now on VS, so allow me to point out that there are stories circulating the our HK10 will wear a small protest band on his arm at the WC in favor of human rights. If these stories are right, a big thumbs up to our Harry and further same on Hugo Lloris for saying that the Qatar government needs to be respected and not protests in favor of human rights should be held.

On a somewhat humorous note: football supporters will be outraged that the Qatar government has gone back on promises and contracts long made and is banning beer sales at WC matches. The rich who will watch in super expensive in super boxes will still be able to buy expensive wines. So much for Qatar’s moral principles.

Whoever participated in the decision to hold the WC in Qatar ought to be shunned in polite society.
