Too expensive? Former PL footballer has his say on potential Tottenham transfer – opinion

If Spurs are to spend £2omillion on a loan player, the only man that could be is Gareth Bale, as Danny Mills writes for the Football Insider.

We all know Bale is the best Tottenham player since Gazza – sorry, Kane – and we all know that he is far from the most popular man in Madrid. His signing would no doubt excite fans and the squad alike, but it is the wrong move to make now.

First of all, the finances would be drastic. Daniel Levy has admitted he would try and sign Bale on a cut-price deal, but £15-20 million for just one season presents too much risk for the level of reward – given his injury record – not to mention his £350,ooo-a-week wages.

We could offer up Eriksen to sweeten the deal, but the Dane has been out of form, particularly since Christmas and if we want to challenge for trophies Levy and co. have to strengthen the squad by adding more players – not swapping.

Bale is simply a pipe dream, and is only talked about by the likes of Mills due to him being out of Zidane’s favour in the Spanish capital. Success in recent years has been down to not only Pochettino’s faith in young players but in his ability to make them better.

Bale is 30. We should be eyeing up future talent or giving young players like Marcus Edwards and Josh Onomah first-team experience – that is what has worked in the past.
