    Morning folks,
BS I suppose this inconsistency you mentioned (and rightly so) only goes to highlight (IMO) that we do have a decent 1st eleven, our issues seem to be when we stray from this.
Which I suppose brings us back to WW’s very valid point with reference to the depth and strength of our squad.
When we need to bring some of our “fringe” players in, it appears that they aren’t up to the job.
We do desperately need a good RB.
The couple we have brought in seem to have “plugged the gap” but time will tell.
There is still much work to be done.
If our first 11 stay fit, and without distractions, I suppose a trophy and indeed a top 4 finish, though unlikely aren’t impossible. Shooting for the stars M8. 😉
Ohhh god a wet Wednesday at Burnley to come 🙄

Love totty – I appreciate for you its about pretty football but has it escaped your notice that in the period you talked about we actually won absolutely nothing ? Do you imagine that for Conte that is ever going to be acceptable ?

  • BelgianSpur says:

Niall – It’s not just depth, in my opinion. Even in the “best” 11, some of the players are awkward fits for Conte’s preferred system.

One good performance, where City essentially gave us all the opprtunity to hit them on the counter, doesn’t mean that this same “best 11” can necessarily break down a team parking the bus. Some games will play into our hands better than others.

Add to that the depth problems (we can’t expect to start the same 11 every 3 days until the end of the season), and there will be more bad days at the office – and a few good ones too, hopefully.

  • Geofspurs says:

BS …. It is that inconsistency that might just get us into the top four because EVERY club is inconsistent apart from the top three …. which leaves the fourth place up for grabs.

  • BelgianSpur says:

Geof – Having an opportunity and seizing it are different things.

Because other teams around us are inconsistent, we have the opportunity. Can we take advantage? Our recent run suggests we can’t.

I think most fans would’ve taken 6 points from our last 4 league games, and expected 4 at the very least. We got 3. As Conte said himself, you just can’t lose 2 games at home on the trot against modest opposition and hope to finish in the top 4.

Currently, Man U are 7 points clear of us in 4th, having played 3 games more. In other words, we have to win all 3 games in hand to go above them. They already have the points, we do not. Arsenal are 3 points above us with the same number of games played. Even if we beat them when we play them next, we’d still be behind them i nthe table on GD.

Mathematically, we are still in the conversation. realistically, it feels like an uphill battle to say the least.

I could understand the optimism 10 days ago, before those 2 ugly defeats. Now, it almost feels like that optimism is a form of denial.

BS, must agree “one swallow” and all that.
However we did go thru an unbeaten run of around 9 games, if we can get the Dier /Romero mix working plus if the “new midfield manages to gel, this was one of our weak points.
With that said, we are poor at RB also there were those who, against Wolves fell back to their previous bad habits.
Agreed its not just managing the squad, as we currently don’t have a good enough squad to manage, as, has been said it is consistency and not over playing our best players yet again.
But if we can remain within touching distance of top 4 we do have a chance.
Agreed we aren’t in the driving seat and indeed have come 3rd in a 2 horse race before now.
But we’re in and abouts, so here’s hoping. 🤞

  • Geofspurs says:

BS …. That’s my point. Can’t you see that other teams are not taking their chances either. You are just focussed on Spurs. Fourth spot is is there for the taking if ANY team hits a consistent run of form. And we are as ‘consistently inconsistent’ as any team vying for the spot on offer. It will be more a game of leapfrog and less a game of football for the rest of the season …. maybe.

  • Niall D says:

    Hi folks
Re your point Geoff, in the prem very few teams are a pushover or a Gimme.
If we look at S’oton lately, some very good results from a Lowly start.
Many “Big teams” have had a shocker this year.
I still think that though unlikely, its still possible for us to be in that top 4 given, we don’t have the distractions of Euro games, that Man U, Leicester, W/Ham, currently have, we are in some, ways in a better position than they are, if we can keep injury free.
We are there or abouts, whilst at the back of the chasing pack, we’re still there for now, anyways.

  • BelgianSpur says:

Geof – I do see your point, but the big difference for me is that we are not on equal footing. If we were on the same amount of points with the same amount of games played, fair enough. We’re on the same starting line.

But we have a 7 point deficit as things stand, and we need everything to go right in order to bridge that gap. It feels unlikely to me.

As Niall said, with plenty of ifs, we have an outside chance. How often do the stars align for us?

Our hopes are hanging by a thread and basically, we are one Dier/Kane/Romero injury away from going back to mediocrity. That is the reality of our situation, for me.

Anybody see the stats for the game v City, the two new boys came out top 1 & 2 as the most km completed/covered in the game, Hoj was 3rd and Harry was 5th, forgot who was 4th. COYS
