The Good Samaritan

Martin O’Neill has a penchant for mediocre players.A glance at his record in the transfer market reveals as much.No gasps of surprise then that he has been linked with several of our ‘underwhelmers’.

Thus far, we have endured a disappointing time of it in the transfer window, but there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon in the shape of rumours that O’Neill has his eye firmly fixed on Jermaine Jenas. In fact, these whispers are gaining momentum, more so now that Stiliyan Petrov has dislocated his shoulder. This, coupled with the loss of skipper Gareth Barry to Man City, has left Villa’s need to strengthen their tiny squad a matter of extreme urgency.Whether Jenas could help solve their problems is immaterial – the point is that O’Neill is daft enough to think that he could. He has form.

For all ‘Arry’s protestations that he wants to keep his best players, Jenas included, those of us who know better can you that it is unadulterated twaddle – sales pitch, if you prefer.Jenas epitomises most of what is wrong at the Lane; infuriatingly inconsistent and devoid of leadership qualities, he will never be the player we need him to be.

It is reckoned Villa will make an initial bid of £7million for Jenas but Levy will be confident of squeezing much more out of them, as their need for reinforcements is so glaring.Danny holding all the aces – just the way he likes it.

If we are serious about landing Ashley Young, this could be the start of a celestial merry-go-round, with two or three of our rejects going in the opposite direction. It’s the kind of notion that is enough to make our wheeler-dealer gaffer giddy with excitement.Keep your binoculars at the ready because you can bet your bottom dollar that we will do business with Villa this summer; it’s merely the extent of it that remains to be seen.
