“The Beauty Of The Competition” – Pochettino Philosophical As Spurs Become A Scalp

|

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino took his first team squad to Colchester United on Tuesday evening as we looked to put last week’s disappointments behind us, and get back to winning ways in the third round of the EFL Cup.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino certainly rotated the first team pack and we saw Academy graduates Trpy Parrott, Japhet Tanganga and Oliver Skipp brought into a much changed lineup as other players got a run out.

It was a slow start to the opening 45 minutes as although we dominated the ball, we only had one effort on target to shout about – albeit, by the half time stage, Colchester had yet to have an effort themselves.

Second half was similar, we dominated but as we entered stoppage time we’d only tested their goalkeeper four times and plenty of fans would’ve felt nothing but frustration, as in the second period we removed the youngsters from the side and brought on Son Heung-Min, Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela – but to no effect.

Onto penalties.

Let’s cut a long story short – Colchester won 4-3.

Speaking to the BBC following the final whistle, Poch said of our efforts on the night.

“Colchester made a fantastic game, it was difficult. We are so disappointed we could not score in 90 minutes. They beat Palace on penalties too, that can happen. That’s the beauty of the competition, always something can happen. We wanted to go further but we are out.”
