Now that we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief following Spurs’ confirmation of their entry into the last 16, here are a set of stats from Tuesday night’s proceedings in Marseille’s Stade Orange Velodrome:
- Since the competition was called ‘The Champions League’, Spurs have qualified for the knock-out rounds in all bar one of their 6 appearances in the competition (2016-17).
- This was the first time Spurs had won on French soil in the Champions League, having not won in France in European competition in 6 matches prior to Tuesday (last European match in France a 2-1 defeat to Monaco).
- This was Spurs’ first away win in European competition since a 4-1 victory over Wolfsberger in the Europa League in February 2021.
- This was Spurs’ first away win in the Champions League in just under 2 years – a 4-0 win at Red Star Belgrade in November 2019.
- Mbemba’s goal meant that Spurs have now conceded the first goal in their last five matches in all competitions – the last time this happened was during Jose Mourinho’s tenure in 2019-20, a run of 5 league matches from December 2019 to January 2020.
- Spurs have now conceded the first goal in 11 matches out of 19 matches in all competitions this season, but have only lost 4 of those matches.
