I didn’t see the game …. how was it?

  • 123spurs says:

In the hat. If conte can dot the I and cross the T. With the 2 new additions we get into a settle team rhythm with all subs playing their part. Coys

  • Niall D says:

Pretty good result, I thought we dominated the first half, they had a pretty dangerous spell in the, second half for around 15 mins.
All in all I thought we deserved the win, the new signings look promising but its hard to say in 20 mins of a game where you’re 3-1 up.
The game was a good watch, some nice football played, The guy Bissouma for Brighton , as, WW says looks a great player. Would like to get him in the Summer.
Thru to the next round. COYS.

  • jod says:

Decent performance, we seemed to have a game plan and stuck to it. The big difference between the two teams was the finishing. If we get chances we will usually get goals, Brighton had some good build up play but no end product. Emerson probably had his best performance as a wing back as opposed to a full back and Sanchez had a good game.

I have problem when people talk about players without saying what they expect them to deliver. I’ve always argued there are basically three reasons you might sign someone. The first is simply reinforcements, you need two players for every position so if you are short handed it may make sense to sign someone as cover. Then there is the real game changer who can actually take the team up a level. Finally there’s the young player you think you can develop into the game changer, requires more patience and is more of a gamble but should be a lot cheaper. As far as I can see Kulusevski and Bentacur are reinforcements, useful with the number of games but they aren’t going to make us a better team. With Bentacur I’m a bit concerned he managed to pick up a stupid, pointless yellow card in the short time he was on the pitch. With regard to Bissouma to me he’s another reinforcement, good but not good enough to lift the team to the next level. Funnily enough I’d be more interested in Lamptey. Bissouma is 25 and his room for development is limited, Lamptey is 21 and could still improve a lot in the next couple of seasons.

  • Niall D says:

Funnily enough Jod, I disagree, I thought Bissouma, was easily the best midfielder on the pitch last nite, he was strong controlled, hard to shake off the ball, appeared to play good telling passes and drove his team forward, Lamptey, indeed was good and may be good but in the limited time I have watched him not exceptional.
But still we won last nite, our new, recruits did well not enough to judge em just yet, will they improve the team from those who left, I think so, will they make us world beaters who knows….

  • Geofspurs says:

jod …. Wow, great assessment of our two new players …. after how many minutes on the pitch?

    • wentworth says:

There were 2 exceptional performers on the pitch. Kane and Bissouma.
If we can keep Kane, we could benefit by signing Bissouma and Lamptey.
If Brighton had a Kane type player, they would be strong outfit. Very good approach play but limited up front.

  • PompeyYid says:

A good win last night, stuck to orders, a system is starting to look that it is coming/taking shape, baby steps etc.

Newbies…Bentacur looks a regular once fully match fit, good on the ball, no nonsense DM.
Kulu, again looks a regular, 100% improvement on Bergs n Lucas, once fully match fit, for me a team player.
Both given 20+minutes against a vg Prem side, that’ll do for me

Bissouma, what an buy and addition to our mf he would be, but methinks that will depend on his court case, owned the mf in the 2nd half.

Lamptey, not sure about him, never really was, Reggie owned him.

    On we go, next! COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    Away to middlesborough, next round…

  • Niall D says:

That’s what I love about this site at times, we get two new players in, they’ve barely got their cases unpacked, never mind a training session, one of em has flown across god knows how many time zones, they play in a team they don’t know, may not even speak the language, for 20 mins.
But guess what they’re fekin bang average.
    It must be me. 🤪

    • PompeyYid says:

Haha Niall, so bloody true there, though read my post I was impressed with them.

By the way one of the newbies speaks very good English, Bentacur I think, I could be wrong there.

So its off to the Riverside then…Next! lol! COYS

  • jod says:

Niall D – hmm “average” ? Our ambition is (or at least ought to be) to catch up with Chelsea and Liverpool and eventually City. To do that we need players who are a lot better than average. So do you really think our two signings are players those clubs would be interested in ? When we had our best period under Pochettino we had Kane who came through the ranks, Dele bought from the lower leagues, Son and Eriksen brought from abroad. All were way, way better than average. The two we have just bought are simply not at that level. That’s not being critical, just realistic. Given the state of the league the reinforcements might help us win a tight race for fourth. That is a big prize but its as far as it goes, we won’t close the gap on the clubs above. If we do get champions league next season though it might help attract players who can close the gap.

  • Niall D says:

    Jod
I don’t even know why I’m bothering to answer, but, however, the point is just now we don’t know.
Plain and simple, same as we didn’t know Dele would become great then lose his spark.
Similarly there are those who don’t rate Ericsson as highly as you do. Again he started to flounder towards the end, and if so good why did we not bring him back FOR FREE no less, with his old club previous manager, I wonder why 🤔
Sonny took at least a season to prosper and become one of our mainstays, maybe at the cost of Dele.
Was Van Dyk the greatest centre half in the world at Celtic or even S’oton, that would be a no.
Is Hoj at 15 mil a good signing, I think so, he was selected for the Euros best 11 of the tournament.
In short m8, we don’t know how thses new signings will do, but I am prepared to say that they will be better than those who just left and will be a valuable addition to our club.
You think they are not at that level I may be, wrong but I think these guys, we’re in a team which took two cups in Italy last season, how many trophies have the players you mentioned taken prior to joining us? how many trophies has Spurs won this century that would be none.
So for me at least on paper these guys good acquisitions.
Unlike you I’ll reserve my judgement until I’ve seen them settle in and play the rest of the season.
But for me we are starting to get better.
    You want nirvana immediately.
    And

  • Niall D says:

Meant to say trophies won this Decade.
Mind you one league cup this century Wow.

  • jod says:

Niall D – Tell you what, I’ll keep a note of your comments and we’ll review at the end of next season. I’d be surprised but happy to be proved wrong.

  • Niall D says:

    Do what you like Jod.
I’m not so sad as to do that, and anyways success is subjective so unless these two players score 100goals each, they’ll be a failure in your books,.
But sure save my quotes if it makes you happy. 😉

  • BelgianSpur says:

Very decent performance, my only issue is why did Kane have to play the whole game?

Lack of cover sure, but with the result in the bag after the 3rd, why not bring Scarlett on to mop up minutes?

Overplaying Kane is only going to end up with him injured, and it’s the one area where we have the least cover… It makes no sense to me.

As a side note – is Kane back to his best? He’s got to be close.

Far too early to judge new signings but I thought they did well enough for a debut. What are people expecting? OK, they may not be superstars but they’ll have their role to play as useful squad members, and maybe more if they continue to develop.

    Boro next – good draw.

  • Allan says:

A well deserved win yesterday and apart from the first 20 mins or so of the 2nd half an enjoyable watch ( at last !! )
I have been a strong critic of Emerson but a great turn of speed . He generally played well but let’s not go overboard just yet .
I have been impressed by the way Conte has managed ( having got rid of most of the dead wood ) to make the team play well . An e.g. is Winks who has listened and worked hard and is now trusted by Conte . Well done to him . How many panic hoofs up the field were there when Brighton applied the press ? Very few . The passing was much improved and once we are able to control games better then I feel that we have a realistic chance of making 4th .
I know one game doesn’t make a season but this was , more especially the first half , not a decent performance but a good one and one which will be built upon . See how it goes vs Southampton .

  • BelgianSpur says:

Niall – just as a side note regarding Erksen. I don’t think we didn’t go back for Eriksen because he isn’t good enough. I just think he’s too much of a “business risk” for a big club, at this stage.

Imagine he has another heart attack in a few weeks and collapses on the pitch. The negative PR asociated with signing him would far outweigh any contributions on the pitch. “PL club putting performance and profits above player health” etc…

For a club like Brentford, maybe the risk is worth taking because a fit Eriksen is a real game changer for them.

For us, do I think he’d start for us if fit? Yes, but he wouldn’t move the needle nearly as much. So is the risk worth taking?

I think that may have played a role as well.

  • jod says:

I was listening to Alistair Gold and he was saying that Conte made the point that he wants a high press game and that is draining and requires rotation, that the signings will help him rotate. So Conte himself is not saying these players are going to take us up a level, he’s saying they will enable us to play his high energy football more consistently. Of course if that happens we’ll pick up more points, but through being a more consistent team not a better one. I suppose for some fans its like religious faith, every new signing has to be an upgrade on what’s already there until they aren’t. The same Arsenal fans who claimed Ozil was the new Messiah were the ones later deriding him as absolutely useless. I’m sure there are plenty of Spurs fans in the same boat with regard to N’Dombele.

One other interesting Conte comment was that the premier league is so different to other leagues its practically a different sport. Which maybe indicates where scouting can go wrong.

  • Geofspurs says:

    Good point, jod.

  • Niall D says:

My point exactly Jod, we just don’t know.
And I wasn’t and I’m still not going to judge them on a 20 minute cameo, nor will I pre judge them until they have played for a time.
As I said are they next level, I don’t know, but I do think, just think that they are an improvement on the ones who left. And for me they may improve the performance of our team.
As I said at the time, the TW was more about who left than who came in.
And indeed that those who left my improve in different teams, away from Spurs, similarly our signings my shine in a Spurs shirt, in short we just don’t know yet.
Re Ericsson good point BS, I personally thought he, was worth a punt at one stage, given his history with us, and Conte, but as I said, Tottenham didn’t want him, perhaps it was too Risky to take him, or even he didn’t want to come to us, I suppose in short we don’t know, but I would guess your assessment is prob near the mark.
