Spurs suffer setback in the race for Brighton winger

|

Tottenham’s interest in Brighton’s Leandro Trossard has been well-documented in the past few weeks (read here) but the Lilywhites may have just been handed a setback in their pursuit of the winger.

That is according to Dean Jones who has stated the Belgian is more likely to join Chelsea or Newcastle United rather than Spurs.

Speaking GiveMeSport the transfer guru said:

“The Trossard link to Tottenham is interesting because his versatility would really suit them.

“However, if he is really going to move, then I would say both Chelsea and Newcastle are also going to be in that conversation and might be more likely landing spots given their level of interest and power in this current market.”

From a footballing standpoint, I can see the links to Newcastle with the Magpies crying out for some more attacking reinforcements, as they try to secure Champions League football this season.

The Chelsea links, however, I just don’t understand them at all. Yes, I know Trossard thrived under Graham Potter at Brighton but where on earth would the Belgian fit in at Chelsea?

The addition of Joao Felix means Trossard would now have to compete for places with Raheem Sterling, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech as well as Felix. Surely, if the Brighton man was to move, he would not want to warm the bench, as he would be at Stamford Bridge.

As Jones says, Trossard’s versatility would be a real plus for Spurs. His ability to play anywhere across the frontline would add some much-needed cover to the Spurs frontline, which has been ravaged by injuries this season. He would also provide some much-needed competition for the likes of Heung-Min Son whose performances have flattered to deceive this season.
