Spurs ostensibly say no to PL winger

|

To say that it has been a tough old week for Everton would be an understatement of epic proportions.

After Frank Lampard’s sacking on Monday, Spurs proceeded to hijack the Toffees’ move for Arnaut Danjuma from Villarreal, swooping in to take the Dutchman on a season-long loan yesterday when it seemed that he would be heading to Merseyside at first.

Now, Spurs’ summer target and Everton winger Anthony Gordon has missed training for the third day in a row, and has reportedly been in London for talks with the Everton board over a move away from the club.

As Spurs had unsuccessfully inquired about signing Gordon as part of a package deal with eventual record signing Richarlison from Everton, the notion of Gordon being in London amid Everton’s turmoil set many a tongue wagging in terms of Spurs being touted to reignite their interest for the 21-year-old Liverpudlian and Everton academy graduate.

However, Sky Sport’s Michael Bridge poured cold water over this bonfire, stating that Spurs would not rekindle their move for Gordon, as one can see below:

Given Spurs’ recent signing of Danjuma and intense discussions for Nicolo Zaniolo (even if that also fails to materialise into serious interest), a move for a heftily-priced Gordon would not make sense, particularly with Lucas Moura and Bryan Gil on the books, something that Football.London also alludes to in their take on the matter.

That said, as a homegrown player, Gordon would tick an important box in Spurs’ squad, and with Everton’s perilous financial situation and the player’s clear reluctance to stay at the club, who knows what can happen. It looks unlikely he’ll come to Spurs, but stranger things have happened.
