Spurs eye up another potential Lloris replacement

|

To say that Hugo Lloris has had a tough time in goal of late for Tottenham Hotspur would be a slight understatement.  Indeed, out of the league-high 6 goals Spurs have conceded from individual errors this season, Lloris has been responsible for 4 of those. Spurs have understandably turned their attentions towards a long-term successor for the 36-year-old Frenchman.

As well as David Raya of Brentford (read more about those links here), Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly cast their eyes towards Alex Meret of Serie A pace-setters SSC Napoli, with the Udine-born goalkeeper’s contract in Naples expiring in 2024.

An Italy international, Meret has been the image of consistency since joining Napoli from SPAL just under 5 years ago, racking up 118 appearances so for Gli Napolitani thus far. 19 games into their current Serie A campaign, Meret has conceded just 14 goals, a remarkable record that has seen his side establish a 12-point lead over AC Milan in second halfway through the current Serie A campaign

According to La Reppublica (via Tuttomercatowebin Italian), Antonio Conte is an admirer of Meret, but Napoli obviously are unwilling to sell such a prized asset halfway through a season in which they are bidding for their first Scudetto since 1990, and it remains to be seen whether they will even be entertaining any offers for Meret in the summer.

Meret himself seems relatively settled in Naples, having only signed his extension until 2024 with the Neopolitans in October, and the club has the option of extending it by a further year, as can be seen below:

We’ll see how this develops, but in the meantime, you can have your say on Spurs’ transfer activity on the Vital Spurs fan forum here.
