Sonny Side Up For Spurs As We Do The Double Over Villa – Match Stats

|

Tottenham Hotspur were looking to continue their run of decent results earlier today as we made the trip to Villa Park to face Aston Villa in our second tie of the 2019/20 campaign.

Having picked up all three points at White Hart Lane, victory today would see us genuinely put more recent poor form behind us, and make it three wins on the spin in the top flight and following our 3-2 victory, we’ve lifted ourselves up into fifth place in the Premier League table again.

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

It was far from an easy day though, Villa opened the scoring nine minutes in as Toby Alderweireld scored an own goal, but with the Belgian making up for his error to bring us level, we then took a little bit more control of the game and although Villa made it 2-2, when Son Heung-Min completed his brace deep into stoppage time, it was enough for us to take the win.

The game certainly had a few talking points, whether it be VAR again or the penalty itself, but can we make it four on the spin now?

Was a hard fight win but totally deserve and for the people who keep calling Jose pragmatic and defensive coach washed up playing in the pass !! Really what they want more ??? That he going to fail at spurs because they don’t can concede he going take spurs to really things and not just be happy about qualifying for champions league it sad those pretending coaches from sofa be so frustrated with their on lives and never been able to reach nowhere

  • wentworth says:

Phew. I hate watching Spurs these days . So frustrating but we stole the three points. Yeah. Well done Sonny for sticking with it. We missed loads of chances today and Reina played a blinder. Thought Lloris was suspect for both their goals. Dier passes to the opposition all the time. Aurier an enigma…lives so dangerously and makes one good cross out of three. We could have bought Grealish for £6 million apparently but Levy though that was too much. Bergwijn looking good. Very quick and dangerous. Dele should have had a hat trick. Defence often looking shaky but Davies did ok. Onwards and upwards.

I’m liking the look of us going forward……..I enjoyed this game, we totally deserved to win this game, the more the guys upfront play together the better it will get, great to see us make so many chances, Aurier needs to go asap , now Davies is back I was hoping not to see him. And we messed up not getting Grealish. Looking forward to our next game.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I’m not sure I can believe that Grealish was available for £6m just 18 months ago.

I know I keep banging on about it alongside El Jefe but we desperately need a CB, preferably left sided, who is good at defending high crosses, preferably around 6 feet 4 rather than a shorthouse!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Spurs beat Chelsea next week and we could well be in 4th place… (C’mon United)! And yet I am still reading so many negative things about our coach and most of our players…

If winning is this bad, then please Tottenham, just keep winning!

3-2, 4-3, 5-3, 6-4! I don’t bloody care! That’ll be better than just winning 1-0 every week and the goal difference is just the same… 🙂

Up the PL, Up the Spurs!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    No it’s not you fool!

Now if it was 3-2, 4-3, 5-4, 6-5, then yes… the GD is the same as if it were all just 1-0’s!…

    BUT.. 1-0’s will do…

  • TQ2Spurs says:

To be fair HT the majority of the negativity around players is down to just two, one plays full/wing back and the other plays defensive midfield.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

That’s not so on the forum, TQ. Almost every one of our players has posters laying into them. Even when they are not playing. It’s ongoing. Non-stop. Win, lose or draw…

Players will have bad days, a run of bad form or may not be ideal in a supporters mind. But I do get fed up with the way some supporters seem to think that players need to be perfect in all ways, in every aspect of the game, every time they play…

It’s always been the way though. It was the same under Poch and every manager before.

For me it’s obvious that our players are working hard to turn this season around, given the very poor start. And it’s also obvious that we are currently in transition. We have plenty of new faces and they are young.
I just wish that supporters would not just see them as soccer-machines or commodities, lumps of meat, etc…

It’s this obsession for perfection all the time that for me has been slowly but surely ruining many aspects of the game. Both as an entertainment and a sport. And along with VAR, it’s now speeding up the process.

I’ll not write another essay on here. No one takes much notice anyway do they…

I know that even if we win something this year and do finally finish in the top for, there’ll be complaints or negativity. Me, I just wanna enjoy the game. Warts and all…

    • TQ2Spurs says:

I don’t go on the forum HT so wasn’t aware of how bad the criticism of players is on there.

As you say, despite all of the issues we have faced this season we are still in with a shout of top 4 (although fifth will possibly do) we are still in the FA cup with a very winnable game in the next round, and we are still in the CL although I fear our defence is likely to be undone by a free scoring Leipzig side!

Ok, we haven’t been playing at our best and blowing teams away but we are getting results, we can all have a go at this or that player if they are having a bad game but this should be expected now and then, nobody is perfect, least of all me! lol

  • jod says:

Hot Tottingham – In all my years watching Spurs there has always been a section of our fan base who seemed to need a player to hate, it hasn’t changed in 40 years and it probably won’t in another 40. All you can do is ignore them.

I really get fed up with this Grealish rubbish. Yes he’s good, but better than Son, better than Moura, better than Bergwin ? because when Kane is fit we’ll only play Son and one of the other two. So what exactly would we do with Grealish ? A decent left sided defender would actually be more use to us.

As for Mourinho, he’s doing what he has to do while we are playing two games a week and picking up points doing it. Come the summer when he has time to work on the defence we’ll start to see what a Mourinho team looks like.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    Hey, it’s just my opinion…

But for example, I have read so much negativity toward Son this season and yet he keeps winning us matches.

And yet supporters have been reminiscing about Greaves and how he would win us so many matches. Saying stuff like he would do nothing for an entire game and yet so often pop up with a last minute winner or equaliser. He was always praised for this and still is now. Rightly so.

In other words he didn’t need to do anything much more but score goals. And he did! But these days if a player does the same, (Son), even after running his nuts off for 90 plus minutes, he still gets it in the neck for not scoring 3,4,5 goals and not just the 2, including the winner. For not being good enough defensively. For being too selfish. For not being Messi! Or indeed, Jimmy Greaves…

So, he doesn’t score with every chance he gets. He is not perfect. Who is?

What more do we want from these guys when they are already giving their all?

Rant over… After all, I’m happy and I’m clappy today. After watching a great match of football and seeing Spurs win it. Thank you Son. Thank you Jose… Up the Spurs!

  • Allan says:

HT Picking up yourpoint ref criticism of players .
I agree with you however it is difficult to be positive ref Dier and Aurier ? Both gave the ball away and against a more clinical side would have been punished .
I see that on social media Ali is getting hammered !!! Yes he missed opportunities and can be frustratingly poor at times but has tackled back and put an effort in and has created .
Unfortunately fans are fickle since if a player has a considerd poor game they will begin hammering him even if it is a one off !!
I remember Winks who is really good being heavily criticised but look at him now . Le Celso was not long ago not worth the shirt !!!!!
I think we have to ignore the knee jerk reaction of some fans `and try to be poitive in what Jose is doing with the sqad he has inherited . At present we are getting results by out scoring the opposition with the players we have !!

    • Hot Tottingham says:

Allan, I will criticise players too. You wanna hear me when I’m watching. I’m a foul-mouthed yob! But yes its players like Son, Lucas and Dele getting it time and time again. When all I see is them always trying hard to win us matches… They and all of them are not beyond criticism. Of course not. But they are good players. Not perfect but they bloody give it a good go. Them and others…

      I don’t know… I’m just having a moan…

  • Allan says:

    ….positive !!

  • PompeyYid says:

HT….you ask why Son gets moaned about, answer today’s generations attitude, bound to be repercussions there, as a Jimmy my hero fan totally agree.

Now yesterdays game it was entertaining, like watching a good crime thriller, what next, there where villans and hero’s all over the park, heart stopping moments, some say we want to be entertained well you got entertained, ok some close your eye’s defending, some very good forward play incl’ poor finishing etc and a twist right at the end, what more can you ask for lol!

    Well deserved Spurs. COYS

  • PompeyYid says:

Yesterdays game emitted all the feelings of all emotions, in the end I loved it. COYS

  • PompeyYid says:

Allan…don’t forget “I never want to see him in a Spurs shirt ever again” Sissoko, from get out of my club to you hero. lol! and if I remember correctly a certain Mr Modric got the same, the rest being history now. COYS

  • PompeyYid says:

Continuing the chat regards Son, I just watched an interview with him and him saying basically “though I got 2 goals I had a poor game” nothing like being honest there, love it. COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

And Son will say that because he wants to be the best he can… And he wants to win us games.

He wasn’t at his best and hasn’t been. But it’s his sheer effort and non-stop running that eventually got us the win yesterday. And I can’t knock him for that. Or indeed for not being a great defender either! 😉

  • block 108 spurs says:

Day after the game at Villa…. We should have scored 5 or 6. But we let villa get belief of wining after 9 mins. Toby admitted he made a mistake, ( guess his mind not fully on the game but his new baby boy.) Lloris also at fault. Dele sonny maura tried hard and villa goalie did some good saves, sonny has to change his penalty taking as easy to read now…. but… we got the win in the end. Jose is much better than poch tactically, and thats why he wins trophies…. COYS

    • TQ2Spurs says:

block 108……I’m not sure Toby should be blaming himself for the own goal, Hugo clearly started to come out of his goal to claim the ball but then hesitated and went back and left Toby stranded and having to make a last second decision on how to deal with it.

  • Allan says:

Although we can all be critical of certain players every member of the team is now trying hard ( especially now Erikson has gone ) but it is difficult to excuse the consistent mistakes some of the team continue to make !!
However we have won 3 on the spin and we did look good going forward yesterday . Perhaps on another day Son and Ali might have got hat tricks .
Yesterday was a double bonus since I could watch the T20 and Spurs at the same time !!
I went swimming a very happy person .

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I suppose that for a few supporters the ideal result tonight would be a draw between United and Chelsea. But I’m hoping for a Man U win. Even more pressure on the Blues if they lose and United will still remain below us, albeit closer.

Of course there’s the small affair of the CL match vs Leipzig at the Lane on Wednesday that will conspire to make it even tougher for Spurs to win at the Bridge on Saturday. Tough for Jose and the players. But I’m confident that we can win both matches. Either way, win lose or draw for Spurs or for Chelsea and MU tonight, the season will still be alive on all 3 fronts for THFC.

Much better than it looked up to last November, anyway…
