Second Tottenham player leaving for free, £20m loss could see Daniel Levy quiz Pochettino

|

According to Dave Hytner of the Guardian, Fernando Llorente will leave Tottenham on a free transfer this summer. The 34-year-old is out of contract in the coming weeks and won’t be handed an extension.

Daniel Levy might have some questions to ask of Mauricio Pochettino, however, as Llorente leaving on a free transfer will have cost the Tottenham owner £20m for two underwhelming years of service.

Tottenham paid £12m for the Spanish international in September 2019 and agreed a two-year contract worth £3.9m-a-year/£75k-per-week. Llorente scored 12 goals in 55 appearances, just two of which have come in the Premier League.

The former Athletic Bilbao target man was signed as backup for Harry Kane but was handed only 223 minutes of league football in 2017/18 and 393 this campaign. Llorente has started just 17 games in two years and will want regular football after leaving Tottenham.

Bilbao have shown a real interest in the striker and could make a move when he’s official a free agent over the summer. Real Betis have been linked with Llorente too, but it’s unknown where his next destination will be. His future could become more clear in weeks to come.
