Robinson Living The Dream

Robinson says he is living his life long dream playing for England. ‘I’ve always wanted to be the No.1 and I’ve always aspired to be the man in possession. It was what I dreamed about when I was growing up, although you never think it’s going to happen. When it did, it was a case of realising what I’d done and working even harder to stay here.’

He says in an article in the Mirror, that he is hoping to emulate his friend David Seaman. Well, in most ways anyway, he doesn’t appear to be as keen on growing a ponytail! Mind you, even Seaman has lost his ponytail this week, he had it chopped for charity – and not before time!

Robinson said of Seaman: ‘He’s been an excellent goalkeeper over the years and if I can achieve as much as he did over my career I’ll be very happy and he’s always been good to have around.’ He also explains that he gets the odd phone call or text from the former Gunner and England No1 offering good advice.

The Spurs shot stopper appears to have cemented his place as England No1 and will earn his 18th cap tomorrow in England’s ‘friendly’ with Argentina. He says he knows any mistakes will be criticised but is strong enough to put up with that because he is his own worst critic!

‘If you are a goalkeeper you have to be very mentally strong – and if you’re the England No 1, you have to be even harder on yourself and your own biggest critic. The day you start to listen to other people outside your coaches and your manager, that’s when you’ve got a problem and you can’t go into a World Cup game thinking about what might go wrong. If you go into games worried about ‘what’ll happen if I do this or that?’ you’ll be finished before you’ve started. Every game’s got to be positive and I’m confident in my own ability. I know I’m good enough to cope.’

He also talks in the interview about his move from Leeds to Spurs. ‘Going to Tottenham was a breath of fresh air. It was a new challenge, new faces, new people to impress and it allowed me to focus more on my game and to achieve what I want from it. And the Tottenham fans are second to none at the moment. I’ve never ever had a relationship with the fans like it. The ones who sit behind me in the Park Lane stand are different class.’
