England goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence has praised Paul Robinson who has made the No1 jersey his ever since he got the chance in September 2004 after yet another gaff from David James in the World Cup qualifier v Austria.

Clemence said after the 3-2 victory over Argentina: ‘Paul has done exceptionally well. He has never let us down and more than showed his worth. He made three fantastic saves in the first 10-15 minutes and then made some excellent saves after that as well. In games like, against one of the top three sides in the world, no matter how well you play they will create chances against you. If a team and a defence feels they’ve got a goalkeeper behind them who is going to make great saves like that, which can pull them out of trouble and keep them in a game, then it helps to breed confidence in everybody.’

He continued that the player, who also featured for the England U21’s, has a growing stature: ‘The great keepers are capable of making saves which change games and Paul is gaining experience every game. He is working hard, he is still trying to learn and each game he plays, his confidence grows.’

Meanwhile Robinson said after the weekends victory: ‘Saturday’s game was certainly a pleasing one especially with the result at the end of it….I was pleased with the saves. It’s an old cliché but that’s what I am there to do. That’s my job. I like it when I am not busy but also when I am busy, I have to do my job. I am pleased with my form. I’ve been pleased with my form for the last 18 months for England. I have just got to keep it going. The main thing about a keeper is consistency, limited your mistakes and putting in consistent performances. I have always known about my own ability and always been confident in my own ability. I can’t stop what anyone else wants to write and given my chance I have hope I have proved I can do the job.’

Great for Spurs that the other Premiership clubs were too slow to get his signature, he has what it takes to become a White Hart legend.
