Report: Tottenham join race with Premier League rivals for £30m-rated breakout star

|

Tottenham have joined the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United in the race for Norwich City attacker Todd Cantwell.

According to The Daily Mail, Spurs are keeping tabs on the 21-year-old winger following a breakout season from the Canaries youngster, with stats from Transfermarkt showing that the Norwich academy product has already managed six goals and two assists in the Premier League this season.

With the report stating that Cantwell is valued by Norwich at around £30m, Tottenham will need to open the chequebook if they are to lure the promising attacker to north London in the future, but a move for the youngster, on paper, doesn’t seem to make much sense for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Will Tottenham be active in the January window?

Yes! We have to be!

No! Daniel Levy won't spend

The Portuguese manager has openly admitted via The Daily Mail that he is personally not pleased with the Tottenham defence he has inherited, with stats from the Premier League’s official website showing Spurs have kept the joint-fewest clean sheets out of any side in the division, and with The Guardian reporting that Mourinho will have no money to spend in January, you get the impression the former Manchester United boss has limited funds to splash on new players.

Which is why the club spending £30m on Cantwell makes little sense for Spurs, especially following a summer where they paid a reported £25m for Fulham attacker Ryan Sessegnon according to BBC Sport, who too plays on the left-wing.

With Tottenham strapped for cash and in need of defensive recruitments, it logistically doesn’t make sense for the club to go in big on a young attacker when they are further problems in the squad that need addressing, and although missing out on Cantwell might be a loss in the short-term, a defender who can come in and improve the backline will be much more important to Spurs than bringing in another forward.
