Report: Tottenham consider move for £16.9m-rated set-piece maestro as replacement for Eriksen

Tottenham are reportedly plotting a move to sign AC Milan winger Hakan Calhanoglu, with the Turkish international keen for a fresh start ahead of this summer’s EUROs.

According to Turkish newspaper Aksam via Sport Witness, the 25-year-old forward has emerged as a candidate for Jose Mourinho as a creative player who could replace Christian Eriksen this month, with the Danish playmaker set to depart Tottenham this window for Inter Milan as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

With Calhanoglu hardly featuring for Milan this season as stats from Transfermarkt show and the midfielder’s contract expiring in the summer of 2021, the Serie A giants are tempted to sell Calhanoglu this month at a cut-price fee, with the Rossoneri valuing the former Bayer Leverkusen star at €20m (£16.9m).

Need Him For The Rest Of The Season

Renowned for his set-pieces which have made Calhanoglu something of an expert in the subject as a scout report from Bundesliga.com explains, the Turkish international could be a decent replacement for Eriksen this month, especially given his positional flexibility as stats from Transfermarkt show and his aforementioned quality at dead-ball situations.

With Eriksen being heavily criticised over the past few seasons for his inconsistent delivery on set-pieces as Henry Winter wrote in The Times, Calhanoglu will be a breath of fresh air for Tottenham supporters who have longed to see a player capable of creating chances from dead-ball areas.

Time is running out for Tottenham to both move off Eriksen for good as well as find a replacement for him in the short-term, and with AC Milan keen to ship off Calhanoglu after an underwhelming season with the Italian club and the Turkish international keen on a new start, Spurs could offer the 25-year-old a new lease of life should their Danish playmaker complete his move to Inter sooner rather than later.
