Report: Tottenham agree ‘initial £25m fee’ for highly-rated left-back

According to Marcus Christenson and Fabrizio Romano of the Guardian, Tottenham have agreed an ‘initial £25m fee’ for Ryan Sessegnon. His arrival may raise uncertainty over Danny Rose future, however, with the 29-year-old previously admitting he could leave Spurs due to their policy of selling aged players.

Ben Davies is expected to be first-choice at left-back in 2019/20 and Sessegnon may be his understudy. The Fulham defender has a lot to learn after struggling for consistency in the Premier League last season, but he has some of the attributes to become an effective full-back. Sessegnon has averaged a tackle (99) or interception (45) every 46 minutes in the last two seasons.

In 2017/18, Sessegnon contributed 24 Championship goals, created 58 chances, made 59 successful dribbles (50%) and whipped in 147 crosses with 16% accuracy. In 2018/19, he contributed eight Premier League goals, created 33 chances, made 32 successful dribbles (47%) and whipped in 66 crosses with 20% accuracy.

Tottenham were told to pay £50m in 2018 for Sessegnon but have whittled the Fulham down in negotiations. The 19-year-old is out of contract in 2020, so Fulham were left with little choice but to cash in early on his signature.
