According to Marcus Christenson and Fabrizio Romano of the Guardian, Tottenham have ‘agreed fee’ of £55m with Real Betis for Giovani Lo Celso. The midfielder is ‘set to sign’ for Spurs and will undergo a medical today. Christian Eriksen was expected to be offloaded before Lo Celso was brought in, but the 27-year-old could now be staying after a lack of genuine interest elsewhere.
The Lilywhites will have an outstanding midfield ahead of the 2019/20 season. Lo Celso is a talented player and was outstanding at Betis. In 2018/19, he contributed 13 goals in 32 Liga appearances, created 27 chances, made 63 successful dribbles (61%) and averaged 45 passes-per-game with 83% accuracy.
Lo Celso will press his opponent too, having averaged a tackle (52) or interception (17) every 35 minutes. He’ll be effective in pinning the opposition back, will turn defence into attack by running with the ball from deep and is capable of splitting backlines with one pass. Tottenham have a good player on their hands.
Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks partnered each other on a regular basis last season, but Tanguy Ndombele and Lo Celso could be the new midfield partnership when the pair settle in London. Eric Dier will provide backup when fully fit.
