Report: Spurs to drop pursuit for in-demand 24y/o superstar who left Mourinho’s season in ruin

|

Tottenham have decided against chasing RB Leipzig striker Timo Wenger, despite the club’s attacking problems.

The Express report that the north London club will drop out of the race for the German international despite Spurs’ current injury crisis that sees several forwards out on the injury table, as well as reports from Goal that Harry Kane would prefer to leave Tottenham rather than sit around for another club rebuild.

Werner is highly expected to leave Leipzig this summer with the 24-year-old striker hitting an impressive 27 goals and 12 assists in 36 games in all competitions this season, with the attacker playing a big role in knocking Tottenham out of the Champions League – ending Jose Mourinho’s chances to win silverware with Spurs in his debut year with the club.

No

The Athletic report that Liverpool remain the favourites to sign Werner in the summer, though Manchester United and FC Barcelona both enquired to Leipzig about the Bundesliga star, and for Tottenham, it appears that their attacking intentions for the summer remain away from the Bundesliga.

The Express reported earlier in the year that Mourinho will have £120m to spend in the transfer window to rebuild this Tottenham squad that looks in desperate need of a refresh, and whilst the report claims the defence is the number one area that the Portuguese manager will be looking to improve, the attack remains something Spurs must consider looking to add signings too.

With no fit natural striker currently in the first-team, Mourinho will almost certainly be looking to add more numbers into the forward area of the squad and with Tottenham distancing themselves from Werner, Spurs might be taking a different direction as to the type of striker they want for next season.
