Report: Spurs boss indicates transfer away for key man is ‘nearly impossible’

|

Mauricio Pochettino has clearly stated that Christian Eriksen won’t be leaving Tottenham on the final day of the transfer window.

Speaking to BBC Sport following Spurs’ 2-2 draw against Arsenal, the Argentine coach admitted that Eriksen’s mind has cleared up and that the Danish playmaker wants to play for the club and that it will be almost impossible for the seemingly wantaway midfielder to leave the Premier League side in this window.

Eriksen admitted to The Telegraph shortly after Spurs’ defeat in the Champions League final that he was keen on a new challenge in football, leading to plenty of speculation about a move away from north London this summer, and although Manchester United held talks with the 27-year-old as reported by BBC Sport, the Tottenham star has remained at the club.

Pochettino said: “His mind was clear that he wanted to play. It’s nearly impossible for something to happen [with a transfer], that’s why it was clear. I was a little bit worried about the situation, because we knew very well what was going on. I am optimistic, happy. What is most important is to all be on the same page, with the club.

“That players have a clear idea where we want to arrive and how we want to move, clear minds like today, Christian and different players. (On Monday) they’re only going to be focused on Tottenham, not on thinking about different things that make management so difficult.”

And starting Eriksen proved to be a smart move from Pochettino as the Danish international scored the first goal of the match against Arsenal, latching onto a spilt Bernd Leno save to open the scoring against Tottenham’s fierce rivals for the midfielder to score his first-ever goal against the north London side.

Although Spurs were unable to hold on to the 2-1 lead heading into half-time, Eriksen’s goal and impact on the pitch will seemingly be enough to convince Pochettino that despite thinking of moving on from Tottenham, he can still be called upon to give it his all on the pitch.
