Report: Premier League winner believes £63m-rated magician would “100%” improve Tottenham

Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has backed Tottenham to sign Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho in the summer transfer window.

Speaking on Instagram Live, via The Express, the six-time Premier League winner admitted that Spurs might be the best Premier League club for Coutinho to join should he leave the Camp Nou in the coming months, with Ferdinand believing that the Brazilian magician would improve Jose Mourinho’s attacking line.

Coutinho is currently out on loan with Bayern Munich for the season after failing to impress at Barcelona following his £142m move to the La Liga giants from Liverpool in 2018, and for Ferdinand, Spurs could be the club that saves the 27-year-old from his Catalan nightmare for good.

Would you have liked to have seen Philippe Coutinho at Tottenham?

Yes

No

The former England international said: “Would he improve Spurs? Yes, he would. Is he a Mourinho player? Do they have the finances to get him? I don’t know. But would he improve Spurs? 100% because people like  [Harry] Kane, Dele [Alli], Son [Heung-min] will feed off someone like him.

“Passing, probing, lovely passer of the ball, great change of direction, great awareness and vision of players around him. I think a lot of the players you hear who’s played with him say: ‘Wow, he’d always find me’. So, I think he would be a great addition to the Spurs squad.”

With a Transfermarkt valuation of £63m, Barcelona will likely be open to selling the former Liverpool star for a hefty price to recoup at least some of the money they paid Liverpool for the number 10. Yet with The Express reporting that Mourinho will be handed £120m to spend in the summer, Spurs could make a genuine attempt to sign Coutinho if his name does hit the market.
