Report Claims Key Spurs Defender Has Decided To Stay – I Wasn’t Aware He Wanted To Leave

|

It must have been a slow news day on Friday as the Daily Mail were confidently reporting that Tottenham Hotspur centre-half Jan Vertonghen had now decided to stay at the club and was seeking a new contract.

The 30-year-old Belgian international is out of contract next summer and he’s closing in on 300 starting appearances at White Hart Lane, but given all the previous contract speculation we’ve seen about the defender – I wasn’t aware that he’d decided to leave and it wasn’t simply a case of organising how long a new deal would run for and other personal bits when we got to that stage.

Least that was the position over the summer according to the press and various claims, so I can only presume the Mail were looking for content and decided that with the early season shenanigans where Verts was left out of the squad by manager Mauricio Pochettino for the Villa clash, and associated fitness claims, they’ve decided to invent a bit of content here.

If there is anything more to it than that, fans will take the positive that he still wants an extension I guess.
