Report: Agent confirms that Spurs star is ‘super happy’ to be at club despite worrying episode

|

Tom De Mul, the agent of Jan Vertonghen, has confirmed that his client is happy at Tottenham despite a recent episode which seemed to indicate that the defender was frustrated with the club and Jose Mourinho.

Speaking to HLN Sport, De Maul admitted that the Belgian international’s reaction to being subbed off against Southampton this week had nothing to do with his future at the club and that he was simply unhappy with his performance as well as how the team performed when he was on the pitch.

Vertonghen was hauled off just before the hour mark in Tottenham’s 3-2 win against Southampton in the FA Cup, with TV cameras catching the former Ajax defender looking physically frustrated and upset about being substituted so early in the game, yet De Maul has seemingly cleared the air about the situation.

Will Jan Vertonghen leave in the summer?

Yes

No

The agent said: “He’s feeling better now. His reaction had nothing to do with his future. He was just disappointed when he got subbed off. Unhappy about his performance and the team’s performance in the first hour,” with De Maul later adding: “Jan is still super happy at Spurs and loves London. He is still very committed. There’s a lot of respect for Tottenham, just like there is a lot of respect from the club towards us.”

With The Daily Mail reporting this week that Tottenham don’t plan on offering the 32-year-old defender a contract extension, Vertonghen’s future in north London remains as murky as it has been for the past six months, yet De Maul’s comments on his star client could be the spark Spurs need to being new talks with the versatile defender who has been one of the club’s most consistent performers since arriving in 2012.
