Pundit Feels Spurs Have A “Massive Asset” Ready To Spark Improvement, But Patience Is Still Required

|

Tottenham Hotspur obviously had a difficult summer and few fans feel manager Mauricio Pochettino was allowed to strengthen with the numbers he’d have liked – but former player and now pundit, Noel Whelan, has stated that when we can finally get to see one of our captures in action, Ryan Sessegnon, he feels our overall form so far in the campaign of 2019/20 will significantly improve.

19-year-old Sessegnon is yet to kick a ball in anger following his £25million switch from Fulham late on in the summer as he’s been sidelined with injury, but he’s nearing a return and given how highly rated and versatile he is, he can only be an asset moving forward for us.

Given our current form, the freshness he might be able to bring to the side could be an advantage of its own given how many players are clearly out of form given their own usual standards.

Speaking to Football Insider this week after more struggles against Watford, he explained that he felt he would be an immediate improvement to the group.

“Yeah I think he can, that’s why Pochettino went out and bought him in the summer. It was grumbling on for a number of years that Sessegnon would be leaving Fulham and Tottenham got in there first and they’ve got a very good young attacking full-back there and he’s a player who is there for both the future and the present. They’ll bring him back gradually but when he is fit, he’ll be a massive asset to that team.”

In fairness, I don’t think this talk suits anyone really. Sessegnon, despite his obvious raw talent, is far from the finished product and he still needs to settle into the side and adjust and although he may provide impetus and improvement on what we’ve seen, we shouldn’t be talking him up like he’d be a saviour at this stage.

He has his part to play and the sooner he hits the ground running and finds some form the better, but there’s no point in building up the expectations as with the current feeling in the fanbase, we’ll only end up tearing him down.
