Match Preview

Preview: Spurs vs Wolves

|

Spurs approach their third game of the 2022/23 season looking to build on an unbeaten start to the campaign with a tricky home fixture against Wolves on Saturday, 12.30pm kick-off BST.

Mixed news on the injury front sees Oliver Skipp closing in on a return to outdoor training following his foot injury, but this match still comes too soon for him. Moreover, Cristian Romero will be ruled out following an abductor injury he sustained against Chelsea. It is likely that Sanchez will deputise for him, just as he did in his absence last season. In brighter news, Clement Lenglet returns to contention after recovering from an abductor injury of his own.

In contrast to ourselves, our opponents have made a stuttering start to this season, losing at Leeds on the opening day and being held to a 0-0 at home to Fulham last weekend. They will still be without Raul Jimenez, and possibly João Moutinho, who may have to settle for a place on the bench following his return to training.

Out of the 8 matches between the two teams since Wolves’ return to the Premiership in 2018, we’ve beaten them 4 times, whilst they’ve beaten us 3 times in the same time-frame, with all of those wins coming on our turf. Nevertheless, this is arguably the strongest Spurs side they will have faced over the past 4 years, and Conte will be looking for a response to Sunday’s subdued performance from the boys come Saturday afternoon. A tough game, but so is every Premiership fixture – COYS!

    They off and running!

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

An alarming lack of quality in our team. Wolves technically far superior

  • 123spurs says:

No shots no attempts at home to wolves. Seriously

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Is this all you’ve got Conte? Not impressed,

  • 123spurs says:

    This system/formation/ players ain’t working

  • 123spurs says:

    Where are oir new signings

  • 123spurs says:

    Are we bad
    Are wolves good
    Or is it both

Looks like conte tactics have been found out.

    Plan B

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Bring back Nuno. Conte seems totally unaware that three centre halves and only two in midfield doesn’t work for us. Especially when our full backs are so bad and our opponents don’t have a centre forward. Bad from Conte for the second week in a row.

Early season optimism fading rapidly after a poor first half against dominant, slicker Wolves.
Only one attempt on target, impotent midfield and sluggish play.
Bentancur seems to have lost his confidence, Kulusevski has been sussed, Son losing out.
We have no creative midfield which makes us boring and predictable. No one pulling the strings. Just a lot of huff and puff.
This is not a top 4 team.
Totally outplayed by Chelsea and Wolves (first half). Not good enough. Very disappointing and worrying.
Second needs a massive change. Strong bench but no creative midfielder anywhere.

Get those 5 subs warmed up

  • TK says:

Our lads did not play like this was a match that THFC must win. Indeed, one would be hard prassed to say that we were the better team. Indeed, we were not the better team in terms of performance.

Come on Conte. Put some fighting spirit into the lads. They need to play like this is a must win, not an optional game that doesn’t really matter.

Wolves are the group that’s playing like it matters who gains the points.

COYS. Play like you need to win. Don’t listen to those who would say otherwise.

Not an acceptable first 45 mintues. Not playing like they must win. Playing like winning is merely one of three options.

  • TK says:

Seems like the lads were listening to those who think we don’t need to win today.

This is a must win if the season is to move in the right direction. We cannot afford lackadaisical attitudes about this.

They need to play like every match must be won.

  • 123spurs says:

And we are the home team.
If conte stays stubborn, we will continue to struggle

  • TK says:

Piss poor performance in the first half. Wrong attitude being shown on the pitch. Play like it matters!

The natives have become restless in the stands. They want a team that plays like it’s of some importance to take three points. Play like it’s a must win match as you should in all matches.

This half demonstrates the danger of approaching a match without this attitude.

  • TK says:

Get Richarlison on the pitch. He plays like it matters. Put some urgency into it.

    • wentworth says:

Top for the first and only time this season. Not so much a steal today but worrying lack of creativity in this side. Lots of busying but little to get excited about. Wolves looked far more threatening than us but they had no. Harry Kane.
Conte has created a very workmanlike system that lacks drive and excitement. I thought Perisic was our star man. The rest were reliable but something needs to give us a huge boost. Is there time still to sign someone to boost the midfield. There is no creativity in the squad at all.

  • TK says:

Too bad the rules do not allow 10 substitutions at the half.

  • 123spurs says:

Phew, letting so many attempts against us

  • TK says:

The first half is what football looks like when the players don’t think that they must win. ouch!

In the end, we needed a win and we got a win. matches against teams like Wolves are matches that must be won if a team is to win anything in the end. Drop points in a match like this and you don’t win anything in the end.

We did what we must: we won. we earned the three points.

  • Arky says:

3 points and top of the table !!! COYS!

  • PompeyYid says:

That’ll do me, play poor, still get points, 3 this time, sign of a good team in the making!

As Arky say’s Top, though only temporarily, mind with luck that’s a maybe temporarily, lol!

7pts more this season against the ditto fixtures of last season.

NEXT…Forest away, bring it on, we might just start a bit quicker, but hey! another win for us. COYS
