Opinion: Tottenham would land a bargain if they raided PL club for veteran shot-stopper

|

If ever there was a time to consider getting a resilient backup for Hugo Lloris, then now is the time.

According to The Telegraph, we are keen to sign Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster on a free transfer at the end of the season. His contract with the Hornets expires this summer and negotiations can take place within the last six months of his deal, which would be a great opportunity for us to have a look at bringing him in.

Looking at the current goalkeeping options at the club, Lloris is the best that they have but it is all about who they could bring in to deputise for us. Paulo Gazzaniga had a good start to life at Tottenham but is not good enough to take us forward after the mistake he made against Chelsea, where he was scrutinised by segments of the Spurs faithful and rightly so. He has conceded 26 goals in 18 appearances and kept just two clean sheets in the Premier League, which is not up to the required standard, unfortunately.

Should Tottenham sign Ben Foster on a free transfer?

Yes

No

Even though Foster has let in 48 goals himself, he has still managed to keep nine clean sheets in a side that is viciously fighting relegation and just toppled league leaders Liverpool 3-0 at Vicarage Road. He has buckets of experience and has even attracted interest from fans of Sheffield United, who would take him at Bramall Lane.

Spurs have been awful defensively this season, with the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez all looking like shadows of their former selves during the current campaign. After Lloris suffered a  dislocated shoulder, Mourinho needs to address the goalkeeping issues at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Having kept 50 clean sheets in 354 Premier League appearances and at the ripe age of 36, Foster has shown that he can still be a first-choice stopper at the highest level. The former Manchester United man has also represented England eight times and would be a good choice to provide some competition in the goalkeeping department.
