Opinion: Tottenham won’t sign £45m-rated Barcelona-target as backup to Harry Kane

|

According to the Sunday Mirror (h/t Football.London), Tottenham are interested in signing Maxi Gomez as backup to Harry Kane, but Spurs reportedly have stiff competition from Barcelona for the £45m-rated centre-forward. With Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen having uncertain futures, Mauricio Pochettino may need another frontman in the squad.

Gomes has scored and created 14 goals in 22 La Liga appearances for Celta Vigo this season. The 22-year-old joined the Spanish outfit in 2017 from Defensor and has racked up a total of 62 appearances at Balaídos. His future is uncertain, however, as Celta are struggling in La Liga and risk being relegated if their form doesn’t improve – they’ve lost seven of their last nine games.

Celta currently sit just one place and two points above the drop zone and may be forced to sell Gomez if they can’t escape the drop. West Ham and Barcelona are credited with an interest, but it’s hard to see Tottenham paying so much money for a player that won’t even start. Harry Kane and Heung-min Son are first and second-choice strikers this season, so there’s little value spending £45m a third-choice forward.
