Opinion: Tottenham should sign £125k-per-week forward, nearly joined for £15m in 2014

|

Tottenham may have a lot of positions that need strengthening this summer, with the Londoners already eyeing up centre-backs, central midfielders and centre-forwards. Daniel Levy has to back Mauricio Pochettino in the transfer market after Spurs went 12 months without making a permanent signing, but there could be value among the free agents – namely Danny Welbeck who wanted to join Spurs for £15m in 2014.

Vincent Janssen is surplus to requirements at Tottenham while Fernando Llorente could be released at the end of his contract this summer, forcing Pochettino to sign at least one centre-forward to replace them. Welbeck could be an ideal acquisition as he’s positionally versatile and wouldn’t cost Spurs a lucrative transfer fee.

Tottenham should only need to match his £6.5m-a-year/£125k-per-week wages. Despite being an Arsenal player, Welbeck may be open to a move to the Gunners’ biggest rivals as he’s unlikely to have interest from a better Premier League side – Everton are the next best club being linked. The 28-year-old also wouldn’t be required to move house.

Welbeck’s injury problems might be the biggest stumbling block, however, as he’s missed a lot of action in recent seasons. He racked up only 604 minutes of football for Arsenal in 2018/19, making his last appearance in November 2018 before suffering an ankle injury. He’d be a risk for Tottenham, but Welbeck is surely too good of a player to pass on for fee.
