Opinion: Tottenham may have to pay £20m and £1m wages to sign central defender

|

According to Bild (h/t The Sun), Tottenham are interested in Robin Koch as a potential replacement for Toby Alderweireld. Spurs appear to be keeping their options open in the event that Alderweireld’s £25m release clause is triggered. Koch’s asking price is considerably less than the Belgian’s and he could have modest wage demands too.

The report says Koch has a £20m valuation. His club, SC Freiburg, have an average player salary of £0.45m-a-year/£8.6k-per-week, according to Statista. The central defender joined the Bundesliga club in 2017 and hasn’t signed a new deal, so his wages could be in line with the club average. If he joined Tottenham, he’d at least match the lower earner in the first-team – Kyle Walker-Peters on £1.04m-a-year/£20k-per-week.

The 22-year-old, who can also play in midfield, has made 22 Bundesliga appearances this season, scoring one goal. He’s racked up 1717 minutes of playing time, made 71 clearances, won 61 aerial duels (57%), blocked 29 shots/passes/crosses, averaged 34 passes-per-game with 81% accuracy and has averaged a tackle (23) or interception (28) every 34 minutes.

Freiburg are currently 13th in the division and have conceded 57 goals in 32 games. Koch has only helped his side to four clean sheets this season, so time will tell if he’s high up on their wishlist.
