Opinion: Tottenham could sell out-of-favour forward in Jan, unlikely to join Liga giants

|

According to Marca, Barcelona are interested in Fernando Llorente and Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata after Munir El Haddadi left to join Sevilla. Manager Ernesto Valverde has a number of target men on his shortlist and Llorente appears to be under genuine consideration as he’s worked with the head coach at Athletic Bilbao in the past.

Given his lack of activity at Tottenham, a January move to Barcelona would be a big surprise to everyone, but it’s hard to see a deal going through for obvious reasons. Llorente has played at a high level in Spain and Italy, but his best days appear to be behind him. It’s more likely that Llorente re-joins Bilbao in January rather than Barca.

The 33-year-old has struggled in his 18 months at Tottenham, scoring just nine goals in 44 games in all competitions. He made the switch from Swansea City in 2017 but hasn’t managed to hold down a starting place under Mauricio Pochettino. This season, Llorente has racked up just 36 minutes of Premier League football and will be out of contract when the campaign comes to a close.
