Opinion: Tottenham could avoid signing £20m Champions League starlet in January

|

According to The Sun, Watford and AC Milan are considering a move for Maxwel Cornet from Olympique Lyonnais – a player who was on Tottenham’s radar just weeks ago. The 22-year-old is reportedly valued at £20m and made a name for himself in the Champions League this season after scoring in Lyon’s 2-1 win over Manchester City and bagging two goals in the 2-2 reverse fixture.

The Sun believe Cornet could be tempted to the Premier League and Tottenham are inevitably being mentioned as a potential suitor given their previous interest. It’s hard to see Spurs signing the Ivorian international in January, however, as Mauricio Pochettino isn’t short on attacking options – Harry Kane, Heung-min Son, Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen.

Unless an existing player leaves, one may not be brought in, even if Son is going to be away for a number of weeks due to the upcoming Asian Cup. Cornet isn’t even getting regular playing time for Lyon, having made just three starts in all competitions this season, so it seems unlikely that he’d be so high up on Tottenham’s radar in the winter transfer window.
