Opinion: Ludicrous transfer decision would cost Tottenham nearly £11m

Dani Alves has left Paris Saint-Germain and Phil Spencer of Football.London suggested that Tottenham have a greater need for the 36-year-old than Arsenal and Chelsea, likely due to Kieran Tripper and Serge Aurier’s uncertain futures at the club.

Signing Alves would be a ludicrous decision from Daniel Levy, however, as it goes completely against his spending philosophy at Tottenham and would force Mauricio Pochettino to work with a player he may not have wanted for the 2019/20 campaign.

The Brazilian international wouldn’t come cheap either. He earned £205.6k-per-week at PSG and would set Tottenham back £10.69m if he was signed on a one-year deal. That’s not to say he couldn’t improve the defence, however. Alves is 36 but his fitness hasn’t diminished with age.

He made 23 Ligue 1 appearances last season, scoring (1) and creating (7) eight goals, making 33 chances and 16 successful dribbles (53%). Alves won 44% of his aerial duels, averaged 63 passes-per-game with 86% accuracy, blocked 22 passes/shots/crosses and averaged a tackle (42) or interception (8) every 33 minutes.

However, Tottenham paying nearly £11m for one season of Alves doesn’t represent value for money. It wouldn’t be wise to sign him.
