Official: Tottenham without three players for Liverpool clash, defender returns

|

Tottenham will be without three players for Sunday afternoon’s meeting with Liverpool – Serge Aurier (hamstring), Eric Dier (hip-flexor), Harry Winks (groin). Kieran Trippier has returned after missing the Southampton clash and could be given the nod by Mauricio Pochettino to start at Anfield.

The 28-year-old picked up a gluteal muscle strain before the international break, but he recovered last week to make Gareth Southgate’s England squad that faced the Czech Republic and Montenegro in respective Euro 2020 qualifiers. Kyle Walker was preferred at right-back, however, so Trippier was handed a rest.

Vital Spurs reported that Aurier won’t be in the squad to face Liverpool as he’s out with a hamstring injury. With Pochettino calling upon Kyle Walker-Peters against Southampton, it was unlikely that the out-of-favour 26-year-old would play much part against the Reds on Sunday. His future has been in doubt this summer.

As for Dier, the defensive-midfielder has only racked up 102 minutes of Premier League football since the turn of the year. His latest injury is with his hip-flexor. A somewhat like-for-like replacement would be Victor Wanyama, but the Kenyan’s last of playing time could make Pochettino cautious about using him in such an important game.
