Official: Tottenham man ‘being assessed’ ahead of Crystal Palace clash, has ‘ankle irritation’

|

Tottenham confirm that Davinson Sanchez is ‘being assessed’ ahead of Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Crystal Palace as he’s suffering from ‘irritation in (his) ankle’.

The 23-year-old has been a regular this season, featuring against Aston Villa (August 10), Manchester City (August 17), Newcastle United (August 25) and Arsenal (September 1), but his role was changed for the North London derby.

Mauricio Pochettino used Sanchez as a makeshift right-back as Kyle Walker-Peters and Juan Foyth were both sidelined with injury, but the Colombian international is now a doubt himself.

Walker-Peters has returned to training ahead of Palace’s visit, so he may be given the nod over Sanchez. Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are likely to start at centre-back if Pochettino opts for a back-four.

Injuries have been plaguing Tottenham’s squad this season, with Foyth (ankle), Sanchez (ankle), Walker-Peters (hamstring), Ryan Sessegnon (hamstring), Eric Dier (hip), Giovani Lo Celso (hip) and Tanguy Ndombele (thigh) having been on the treatment table of late.

Pochettino doesn’t have the luxury of naming his strongest XI and is being forced into squad changes every week. Tottenham haven’t had the best start to the new season either – ninth in the Premier League after four games – but could move into the top-four with a win on the weekend.
