Official: Tottenham defender ‘unavailable’ against Crystal Palace, undergoing ‘conditioning’

|

Tottenham have confirmed that Juan Foyth will be ‘unavailable’ against Crystal Palace and is still underdoing ‘conditioning’ before he’ll return to training. The 21-year-old hasn’t played a single minute of football for Spurs this season and isn’t expected to return until late-September, according to Premier Injuries.

Foyth was expected to compete with Kyle Walker-Peters for a starting place at right-back this season, but his ankle injury has pushed him down the pecking order. The Argentina international will provide backup for Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez at centre-back, but he could spend a portion of the campaign on the periphery.

Since joining Tottenham from Estudiantes in August 2017, Foyth has gone on to make 25 appearances in all competitions. The 21-year-old has yet to hold down a starting place for a prolonged period, however, and may have to be patient for opportunities.

Nevertheless, with Vertonghen and Alderweireld out of contract in 2020, Foyth could become an important player next season. He just needs to prove his worth when called upon. The youngster has been tipped to return when Spurs face Southampton (Premier League) on September 28.
