“Nothing Really Changed” – Some Spurs Fans May Be Mixed On Player Return But It Makes Perfect Sense To Me

|

As Tottenham Hotspur fans will be aware, following the injury sustained by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in the hugely disappointing defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion ahead of the October international break, last week we secured the return of former player and free agent Michel Vorm.

Most expect the 35-year-old stopper to play second fiddle to Paulo Gazzaniga until Lloris returns to full fitness and contention, given how the Argentine international established himself as our Number 2 as the 2018/19 campaign progressed, but already knowing the squad as he does, Vorm returning makes a hell of a lot of sense for me.

That can’t be said of everyone in the fanbase though, but that was probably to be expected given the modern world of social media when his return was officially confirmed on Monday.

Following his return, Football London quoted Vorm talking about his return, and understandably for him, in many ways it was a no brainer and he was happy to come back and help out, even if he’s only signed a deal until next summer.

“I’m happy to be back. It’s easy in a way. Nothing really changed – I know most of the players and the staff obviously. I’ve been here for four or five seasons so for me it’s coming home. I was in Holland at home watching the game and obviously I saw straight away that he had a bad injury and after the game I spoke with Jan and Toby and during the week I got the phonecall. I was open to coming back and helping out.”

Given the overreaction from some to this news, I’m not quite sure what people expected with the window shut as cover could only come from the free agent market and at least Vorm doesn’t have to settle in.

I doubt the door is overly closed to our youngsters, but with the wobble in form in recent weeks, would anyone really want a young lad learning their trade, to come into that atmosphere in a position as pivotal as goalkeeper?
