Newcastle eye ‘transfer’ for Ryan Sessegnon as Tottenham weigh up £25m man’s future

|

According to The Sun, Newcastle are eyeing a ‘transfer’ for Ryan Sessegnon with manager Steve Bruce looking to replace Jetro Willems after his loan spell came to an end. The 20-year-old has an uncertain future at Tottenham after a disappointing debut season and could be loaned out in 2020/21 to get regular playing time.

Interest growing in Sessegnon

In addition to Newcastle, Ajax and Fulham have been linked with a move for Sessegnon. The England U21 international can operate at left-back and on the wing, providing an attacking threat going forward while having the industry and pace to do his defensive duties.

Sessegnon could replace Willems at Newcastle, replace Hakim Ziyech at Ajax and fill his old role at former club Fulham, so it’s easy to see why the aforementioned trio are showing an interest. The question is whether Tottenham are willing to loan out the wide-man next season.

Will Sessegnon get first-team football in 2020/21?

Probably not at Tottenham. The 20-year-old made 12 appearances in all competitions last season, amassing less than 800 minutes of playing time across the board. Sessegnon had a hamstring injury at the start of the campaign and didn’t make his Premier League debut until November 2019. His last league outing in a Tottenham shirt came in January 2020.

Danny Rose and Ben Davies were preferred at left-back while Heung-min Son and Steven Bergwijn were preferred on the wing, so Sessegnon’s best hope of getting first-team football may be away from North London. Jose Mourinho tried to sign the 20-year-old as Manchester United manager and said he plans to convert Sessegnon into a left-back at Tottenham, so it’s hard to see a permanent move sanctioned. A loan would suit all parties.

Difficult decision to make

Tottenham paid £25m for Sessegnon and would like to see their faith in the wide-man come to fruition, so they may want to keep a close eye on him at Compton next season. That being said, it does little for Sessegnon’s development to sit on the bench and not feature due to established players standing in his way, so we have a difficult decision to make this summer.
