Newcastle 2-2 Spurs: Defensive fragilities again costs Spurs win

|

We have been here so many times this season that it is becoming a joke, and one that rival fans are making but it is no longer effecting us because we have received it so much in the past 12 months that we are immune to it.

What we’re talking about, is of course, the inability to hold on to a lead against a bottom-half side as once again Newcastle grabbed a late goal to nick a point – but the truth is they should have had more.

The home side had an xG of over four goals, a ridiculous stat considering that Steve Bruce is still the manager at St James’ Park and the club are languishing above the relegation zone, helped by the fact that Fulham lost today, on top of them getting something out of this game.

They took the lead just after the half-way point in the first-half through Joelinton, a Brazilian striker who has scored just four Premier League goals in 62 appearances, despite always looking like scoring two or three whenever he faces up against Spurs.

A combination of errors from Japhet Tanganga and Davinson Sanchez allowed Sean Longstaff to slide in the former Hoffenheim man who tucked the ball past Hugo Lloris who had previously just made a miraculous save to deny the unmarked Dwight Gayle, not once but twice.

Harry Kane was then slotted through by Giovani Lo Celso, and thanks to an equally comical error from Emil Krafth to the ones down the other end, the England captain tucked into an empty net to equalise almost straight away.

He then grabbed his second just minutes later, this time a more difficult chance but one still put on a plate for him by French midfielder Tanguy Ndombele and Kane did the rest, arrowing the ball into the far-left corner past Martin Dubravka.

Despite Newcastle making plenty of half-chances, Erik Lamela had two opportunities to put the game to bed – if only he played a pass quicker on both occasions or picked out the right man – as he decided to draw a free-kick instead of sliding Ndombele through on goal much to the record signing’s frustration and also playing the ball to Kane instead of Son who was in a much better position.

The 27-year-old striker did strike the post, but just a few seconds later Newcastle went up the other end and after the ball ricocheted all over the place in the box with not a single Spurs defender managing to turn it away or stop their man, it eventually fell to none other than Arsenal loanee Joe Willock who hammered it into the roof of the net to compile more misery on Jose Mourinho.

The result will be leaving more Spurs fans wondering if it is time for the manager to be sacked, but the immediate inquests will be into the defence, and why it was so incredibly disorganised again, as we again squandered the opportunity to get into the Champions League places after results elsewhere had went our way.
