Mauricio Pochettino calls for English transfer window close date to be moved

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has called for the Premier League to realign its transfer window with that of other European counties.

For the second year in a row, teams in the Engish top-flight have had to conduct their transfer activity the day before the opening game of the season, and although the decision has largely been praised by fans, it allows for teams outside of Europe to still sign players from Premier League sides, something that Pochettino believes can cause clubs problems.

Speaking to the press via TEAMtalk following Tottenham’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City, the Spurs manager said: “I wasn’t in agreement (with the decision) but at that moment they believed that was best for the clubs. But I think he (Daniel Levy) and a lot of people now realise it was a massive mistake. I hope that we fix the problem for the next season.

“I think we need to go back and operate in the same way that they operate in Europe because I think it’s massive when you go to compete in the Europa League or Champions League.

Playmaker Christian Eriksen has been at the heart of speculation for the majority of the transfer window this summer, with the Danish international now being reported by The Sun that Real Madrid are plotting a late move for the Tottenham man, and a problem like this is a concern for Pochettino.

The Argentine boss said: “It’s a problem for a team like us and it’s so clear that I cannot be happy as a coach that in the last three weeks clubs from Europe can unsettle your team. For me, it’s not common sense and we need to go back quick, hope they have a good conversation at the Premier League and go back quickly.”
