Match Thread – Spurs To Bounce Back Against Blunted Blades

|

It’s definitely been an up and down season for Tottenham Hotspur and the last week and a bit hasn’t been any different with the departure of former manager Jose Mourinho and the caretaker appointment of Ryan Mason. We also had the nonsensical European Super League guff to deal with and then, unfortunately, we saw a spirited but attack less performance against Manchester City in the EFL Cup Final.

Now, we turn attentions back to the Premier League, as we welcome already relegated Sheffield United to White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Whatever Mason’s future might hold as we continue our managerial search, we all want a strong end to the season and although the blunted Blades might only be playing for pride now and have absolutely no pressure on them, this cannot be anything other than a comfortable win for Spurs in reality.

Although the Cup Final wasn’t a classic Spurs performance, Harry Kane will have benefited from minutes back into his legs and we could welcome back Matt Doherty as he has now returned to full training, but we will again be without Ben Davies.

Whatever squad we put out, should have enough to take all three points though and given it feels like it’ll be a big summer of change, we could do with all the momentum we can get.

Win

Draw

Lose

Can I ask people why Klinsmann keeps getting mentioned for different roles?

I can’t see him as a candidate for Spurs in any role.

I’m not sure that he has any real love or great skill for management, anyway. And, he seems far to laid back, blase and into his very cushy, Californian lifestyle…

His most recent post was just over a year ago. He was Hertha Berlins manager. He walked out on them after just 10 weeks!

Players and others that have worked with him, have called him unworthy and just not very good at his job. Citing his lack of tactical planning and knowhow… And from what I have seen as an outsider, I tend to agree.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Wentworth… I think there are a few more candidates likely than those two. And I don’t think they are likely choices anyway… At least I hope not.

  • Niall D says:

    HT re Klinsmann
I stand corrected, my knowledge of him, is as a bit of a Spurs legend, and a “decent” International manager doing well with both USA and Germany.
I must admit I didn’t know about his Heartha Berlin tenure.
I’m with you on not wanting those other guys can’t personally see Graham Potter or Sean Dyche as our manager.
But it’s good to see the speculation here.
Re team re build, it is indeed needed some of the names listed by Pauric do need to go.
Agreed Sissoko, Aurier, Winks, Lamella, Sanches, Doh, even Dele.
I think to be rid of those and bring 5 in would be good business for this TW.
Again I will agree many of the other names could go either January or Summer 2022 which would be (For me) a more focused and balanced way to turn the team around rather than a wholesale Exodus where we end up panic buying 6 to 8 players. Just my thoughts.
Re Sonny signing this (for me) is actually an invisible sign that HK10 is staying put, I wonder has he had a discussion with our ‘arry to give it one more year in the trenches.

  • Love totty says:

When I look at at Oyvehs list I sigh with frustration and nostalgia for those great teams that played so well with such style and came so close against superior funded squads. For make no mistake that has been the difference. What is not clear is whether Harry or Poch could have managed a bigger squad as they did like their favourites. Bugger winning trophies for now, let’s just get back to playing to our potential and challenging for them again.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I think the one thing in our favour is the Euros, I’m not sure Kane will want the distraction of moving clubs in the summer.

  • 123spurs says:

Kane is a family man, wife kids settled, moving would be changing schhool etc.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

123… Kane’s kids are not yet old enough for school.

Besides, why would his wife and 3 kids necessarily be a deciding factor on his near future and long term career, just because of their location? His wife may fancy a change of scenery herself… And he may well choose a different club, because of his family.

    Who knows?

And if he is ambitious for trophies, (which he says he is), this would probably be the biggest incentive of all, for him to leave Spurs.

    • Geofspurs says:

Just to add to that, HT …. maybe his wife’s an Arsenal supporter.

As you say, everyone will do what they want to do for their own reasons, and any amount of pointless speculation won’t change a bloody thing …. that’s because it’s pointless!

  • Niall D says:

    Hi LT
These are my sentiments exactly ATM. Let’s just get playing back to our potential.
For me if we get a few fresh faces in and start to play positively, the results will come.
Re Kane and moving, I was only wondering why Sonny would’ve signed if he knew Kane was going to leave (the sinking ship) for me he has spoken to Harry and several others to see where they are in the process and decided to give it a another go.
Sonny’s signing alone says to me that several of his contemporaries are also staying put for the foreseeable. As usual I’m probably wrong and Kaner and Hugo will be on a plane to Paris next week.

  • wentworth says:

We need a top, scoring midfielder to play alongside Hoj and N’Dombele. No more Winks and Lo Celso ( 1 Premier goal between them) but someone who can shoot from distance and take decent free kicks and set pieces. That would have made a massive difference this season as well as a marauding right back. 4 or 5 new signings could make all the difference. Let’s hope we can offload Doherty, Aurier, Winks, Lo Celso, Vinicius, Berjweijn, Davies..get some cash in and buy. Bring back Skipp and Sess for cover and give Devine, Cirkin and Scarlett some playing time. Job done. Oh and a decent, modern, attacking coach with good man management skills.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Villa have done us a big favour beating the toffees, I found out the other day that Ollie Watkins went to the same junior school that my granddaughter is at!

  • Niall D says:

    WW
    More or less my sentiments.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Niall… Son hasn’t yet signed a new contract. It’s just a story from the Daily Star. …………….

For me, now would be a good time for him to leave Spurs, anyway. I think that we could do with moving on from him (and possibly Kane), if we are to start looking forward to the next phase at THFC.

I’m kind of bored and fed up with our over reliance on both of these two players, who then both seem to fail to perform well, when it really matters.

But, as of now, they are still Spurs players. And if they really want to win stuff at Spurs and intend to stay, they both need to prove it in the next 5 PL matches… A top 4 finish is needed, and so CL football, being the aim for next season.

EL football will not be a good second choice to the CL. For them and for Spurs, imo. Especially for Harry. Not with the Euros following the end of this season. If we have to play again a similar amount of EL matches we had to earlier this season, then Kane will be probably be pretty knackered before next Xmas comes.

First priority for the club though, is a new boss. And he will have his own thoughts on what we need to do to move on. Aligning of course, with the clubs expectations and aims.

But, regardless of what I may think, I’m pretty sure that the new boss will want to keep hold of Kane at the very least… Son, I’m not so sure about. Especially as he has been in such poor form for the past 4 months…

I’m not that impressed with Son’s tears and feeling sorry for himself. Especially after his recent talk of himself and the team needing to be warriors… Warriors don’t cry. They fight until the bitter end. And they certainly don’t indulge in feeling sorry for themselves……. Not in my book!

    • PompeyYid says:

HT….not being to detrimental here, but REAL! Warriors do cry!
Though I think it is an insult to call namby pamby, totally catered for, me me me, footballers…Warriors.
It pisses me off that term is used, not by you of course bur Son, and do not get me started on being Heroes.

In your book “they fight until the bitter end certainly do not indulge in feeling sorry for themselves”….you are so correct there. COYS

  • Love totty says:

I agree about Sonny, when he’s good he’s very, very, when he’s bad he’s horrid. Actually he relies on balls he can chase, hopeless with back to goal. If Bale regained his mojo I’d rather play him for his all round game, corners, free kicks etc. Surely Deli must be in there again too.

  • Niall D says:

    Morning HT
All good points and well argued, again its one of those where (I feel) nothing is the right or wrong answer. For example we cannot argue against the fact that they Hk/Sonny are the most successful front Pairing currently in the prem and that they have been doing their part (mostly) by getting goals, arguably the issue is that, we Havnt been keeping em out the other end, and, very few other team members have been supplying goals.
On the other hand as you say has this been due to an over dependence on them doing this, or a lack of confidence in the rest of the squad, team balance, tactics.
Or could it be that considering we have arguably had the longest season of any team in the Premiership Sonny has hit a bit of burn out from bein over played.
Or we could do with a change of front men, get the likes of Danny Ings in, as it looks like during this time together, and no matter what the stats appear to say, to put it bluntly we won fek all.
And is the fact that we have these two is preventing others from signing.
In short m8 I don’t know the best answer.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

To be fair, I think Sonny’s poor form is down to Jose’s negative tactics, his natural attacking instincts were stifled by ‘the special one’ so we should give him some leeway and a few games to hopefully shake off the negativity and get back to playing his best, with a smile on his face!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

It goes against the grain but in the interests of THFC I’m hoping United beat the bindippers today and, going with the grain, I hope Burnley give the spammers a good stuffing tomorrow. This, together with Villa’s win over the toffees, will give us a boost in our quest for european football next season. This of course assumes we can get 3 points this evening!

Being realistic, I don’t think we have much (if any) hope of CL qualification so we may well see the scenario painted by HT where many of our squad will knackered by Christmas. Our best hope would be to make 5th which I think would mean going straight to the EL group stage?

  • wentworth says:

I love Son. Fantastic example of a great professional. Superb goalscorer, dribbler and passer. As I said previously, we do not have a midfield general in the mould of Eriksen/ Modric. Son and Kane have to make goals for themselves. Hence Kane playing as a midfielder ( and defender). How many decent passes/ crossed do they get from our sterile midfielders…not many. Son has to run from his own half and Kane shoots from distance or feeds off scraps. We need a top midfielder urgently.

  • Geofspurs says:

ww …. We are in complete agreement. That’s just how I see it.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Hi Geof….I guess you’ll be watching the Chelsea v Bayern game? We play Chelsea on Wednesday evening which isn’t exactly the best time for you to watch live.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

19.15 kick off is a bit of a bummer, the game will overlap the start of the series finale of Line of Duty by about 10 minutes. On a brighter note….BT now have an Android TV version of the sport app so I no longer have to cast from my phone to get matches on the big screen. 🙂
