Match Thread – Spurs Looking For 3 From 3 To End On A High With Villa Up Next

|

With plenty of positives to take from our victory, and the performance, over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend, it’s another quick turnaround for Tottenham Hotspur as we welcome Aston Villa to White Hart Lane on Wednesday for our penultimate Premier League clash of the 2020/21 campaign.

A campaign that started brightly, and faded rapidly as 2021 hit, however, a potential top five finish is on the cards but for that to happen, we have to absolutely take three points from Dean Smith’s side and form is on our side, even though both clubs have wobbled in the second half of the season.

Another big plus is Villa should be without Jack Grealish (cheers Levy), as since returning from injury he’s yet to even play 45 minutes, so hopefully at worst, he’ll only get introduced at the break.

With some confidence returning based on our last performance, you’d like to think we’d be comfortable long before their talisman hits the pitch, and with no fresh injury concerns, only Serge Aurier and Ben Davies should be missing again.

Can Ryan Mason really restore some momentum and get us three wins from three going into the summer?

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

Don’t agree with all of your sentiments BS but do agree that this group has gone stale and needs breaking up and new blood brought in.

  • 123spurs says:

With these group of players I’ve said it before, we are to predictable, slow build up slow tempo, given opposition time to get back into position. We can’t cross the ball, never mind score from one.

  • 123spurs says:

Maybe this shitshow of a season might actually be the wake up call the club needs, as TK says nobody mind losing but put the bloody effort in. The time is now. 2 DARE IS 2 DO

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Gooners score in injury time to re-instate the prospect of overtaking us on Sunday. 🙁

  • TK says:

    … no self respect…

  • Love totty says:

Didn’t dare look at my phone at all during the second half hoping indifference might make difference but hey-ho same old same old. At least Stratford on Avon is lovely and the Thai food delicious. Life goes on.

  • TK says:

There are at least three professional football teams in the city of Ulaan Baatar in Mongolia. I’d be quite happy to see the contracts of some of our players, based on recent performances, sold to clubs there. These are the major teams in Mongolia. If the player don’t put in a bit of effort there, they can get shunted off to the real hinterlands.

Lot of talk here about a wholesale clear out. But I think the team that beat Wolves would have beaten this lot. Instead there were some strange changes which I think cost us the game. Certainly Winks for Lo Celso (and even if LC had not been fit enough N’Dombele would have been a more creative and attacking choice). Bergwyn was another strange choice but although he scored a great goal he reverted to his usual form making little impact on the game and twice shooting straight at the keeper when he had time to finish more clinically.. And we had two decent subs for Dele (Lamela and Lucas) when it was clear that he wasn’t fully up to it in this game. We also have a reasonably good sub Davies) for the erratic Spaniard when he’s fit and Roden for the equally erratic Dier. That leaves Hojbjberg who had rave reviews against Wolves, Kane and Son both of whom seem to have lost their mojo. So decent manager with a bit of luck could still whip most of our remaining squad into shape

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Stan…anyone would have looked good against Wolves who were pretty poor on the day. This current group of players, with an odd exception, peaked in their careers a season or two ago and are unlikely to improve under a new manager in my opinion.

    • Stan Rosenthal says:

So Lloris, Reg, Rodon, Hojbjerg, Lo Celso, N’Dombele, Son, Kane, Bale, Lucas and Lamela are all past it, not to mention Bergwyn who is still a youngster, with Skipp and Sessignon in the wings along with a couple of our promising Academy players.

      • TQ2Spurs says:

I did say with exceptions and ‘in my opinion’ and you missed loads but yes I believe Lloris, Aurier, Davies, Alderweireld, Dier, Son, Bale, Sissoko, and Lamela are past their peak and even Kane is probably at his peak right now and likely to regress from his current level without better players around him. I’m sorry, but I think you are going to be disappointed if you think Skipp and Sessegnon are the answer going forwards.

        • TQ2Spurs says:

Should have included Winks in that list, and just to clarify, age has nothing to do with it, when I say past their peak I mean performance wise and they have little or no chance of improving sufficiently under a new manager.

There is only one word that is apt for the way THFC players performed tonight… spursy.

As for D Levy and his statement today… It’s too late to wake up now and smell the coffee… It has long since boiled dry, which supporters / fans have said for many years now… and that is down to the person who runs the club… So mid table is where we will finish, no Cl, no EL no mega £m’s income….. no glory days on the football pitch all because focus was lost….

  • 123spurs says:

I knew once we went into the new stadium things would go down hill and not be in the CL. Hope this is one big wake up call for the club.

  • Spurfect One says:

We have over 80million worth of Midfield talent in Gio and Tanguy yet Winks is still starting. Can’t comprehend how bad he was and even the basics he wasn’t even doing.

  • Spurfect One says:

1 league cup in 20 years. A manager sacking during a game. Agreeing to join the ESL. Coming close to required signings but not getting them due to having to pay that bit extra, Etoo, Morientas, Grealish, Fernandes, Cahill and many more, yet spending 30 million on the likes of Sissoko and 42 million on Sanchez. Charging the most expensive tickets in Europe. Not backing Pochettino who worked miracles on a shoestring, only to cast him aside for a washed up manager for some reason Levy was obsessed with , without giving a thought of anything else. But its ok, we have the skywalk and a nice shiny new stadium with most likely conference league football. YAYYYYY.

  • Niall D says:

    TK thanks for the quip,
Re tonight, if we look at it in the round, they really created very little, how many saves did Lloris have to make, their goals were our gifts, this doesn’t make it any easier.
The team tonight was filled with Ryan’s mates in his efforts to get them into the Euros and little else.
Winks and Dier need to go, we need a complete new defence, we yet again looked pedestrian and clueless through the midfield, whilst Bergwijn’S goal was indeed welcome, if we look at his chances he should’ve scored more, but like the first he just blasted em and hoped for the best.
Bale and LoCeslo or N Dombers should’ve been on since the start.
As many of us have said it wasn’t all down to Mourinho, some players need to take time, forget about the Maldives and look at them selves and ask “did I really put a shift in this season?
In many ways Mr Levy’S statement has vindicated my own thoughts re the stadium build, it was their only focus and anything else, including the actual football team, was a distraction
For those who love the stadium, I warned about this, listing Arsenal’s woes as a template, well we are in the same boat nice stadium, mediocre, midtable team.
Now I have no doubt that in a few years time we will have a decent team to grace, the most modern, greenest stadium in the world, but by the time we win the league it will look like the “Odeon Epheseus” or the Colleseum in Rome, looks like I won’t see it, nor will my grand kids Coz they’ll probably support United or City as I couldn’t convince em to follow this lot.
Think on it, many kids are currently following Spurs because HK10 is England Captain, now when we lose him, what is there to bring kids to support Spurs? Fek I know Guns and Roses are playing next month yaaay.
    Maybe I’m moaning too much.

  • wentworth says:

Seems as though the other teams around us wanted it more.

  • wentworth says:

That may well have been Harry Kane’s last home game.He looked devastated at the end and couldn’t even wave goodbye.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Let’s turn the stadium argument on it’s head:

Our stadium deserves a squad of players who take pride in having such a magnificent arena in which to perform at their best, it’s a pity that many of the current squad don’t appear to meet that criteria.

  • Spurfect One says:

It’s all too nice and comfy for our players. Nice stadium, nice cushy changing rooms. Nice wages. Not expected to win anything, just to get into the top 4 to keep the owners happy. Rinse and repeat.

  • TK says:

But Spurfect, they didn’t get into the top 4. rinse and repeat didn’t get done.

    • Spurfect One says:

True, although i was more referring to expectations. I always have hated the fact Levy sees top 4 as a success.

  • Niall D says:

TQ the reason the current squad don’t suit the stadium is because many if em are too old or bargain basement players, so aren’t fit to grace the stadium, as has been said “aparrently” by the man himself the stadium was the main focus the football team was secondary, more or less, as some have said we did spend on transfer N Dombers 50 mil (unfit), LoCeslo (injured), Clarke (why?).
We looked for the cheap option every time whilst, lavishing on special beers, roll on pitches, sky walks etc..
But if we look at our top player (price wise) N Dombers, what have Chelsea laid out this season on their mid field £150mill? Liverpool on a goalie and CD 100 +mil.
We scout Sissoko for top dollar, Froyth, Sanchez, Regulon, Doherty, Aurier, do I need to go on.
We’ve been in the yellow pack aisle look for BOGOF footballers to sell on for a few quid whilst we flirt with Europe.
We have a great stadium, yet our best player wants to leave, we have a great stadium yet we can’t attract a top manager, we have a great stadium but we can’t see great football on it, and right here right now, not in five years time, I would like us to look to win something.
Is that too much to ask.

    • Spurfect One says:

Pochettino’s analogy about needing nice furniture for a nice shiny new home really was gospel.
