Match Thread – Spurs Look To Rinse & Repeat The Burnley Performance Against Fulham

|

Tottenham Hotspur will be out to prove we are back in the groove following on from the fabulous 4-0 victory over Burnley at the weekend, and we hope our next victims will be Fulham on Thursday evening.

With plenty of questions being asked about our style of play under manager Jose Mourinho, Burnley was more of a classic attacking show from us and even Gareth Bale properly clicked since his return to White Hart Lane – so everyone will be hoping for a repeat when we travel to Craven Cottage.

Unless I’ve missed something, it’ll be the same group again and players should have taken a nice boost of confidence and be relishing the opportunity to put in another performance again, but as ever, it’s down to us to perform and not let a dogged Fulham into it, as their form of late has been far better.

Another three points in this one and the battle for the European places is far from over.

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

Wish we didn’t wear that awful army surplus camouflage kit. Can’t see us on the pitch and it looks ghastly. Pretty boring first half with us on back foot. Shame goal was not given to Dele. Pitch is very small and does not suit us. Fulham playing close passing game and we are second to most. 50/50 balls. Here’s hoping for a more entertaining second half.

  • Fanman says:

We really need to get some decent defenders. Apart from Toby, our back-line is fodder.

    Pheeeewwwwww!!!!!!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

We got a bit lucky there, we looked like a relegation threatened team in the second half trying to hang on for the win.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Time for a new goalie as well, Lloris is looking so indecisive at times.

    • Shroppie says:

      Disagree on tonight’s permorfornce TQ
      Lloris got us home
But I do agree new no1 in summer

      • TQ2Spurs says:

The first half performance was good Shroppie but after the break we stopped pressing and winning the ball back and let them come on to us as we had been doing a few games back. We were somewhat lucky to come away with all of the points.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I’ll happily take those 3 points. Thank you! … 😉

Fulham really did make it tough for us, as most people said they would… A bit tougher than I expected.

But once we took the lead, I can’t say I ever felt too concerned about giving it away.

So, credit to Scotts team. And well done Jose’s team for the hard earned win…

    Up the Spurs!

  • wentworth says:

Well it was a win but oh sooooo boring. Dreadful decision denying Fulham a deserved goal but that’s the bad luck you get at the wrong end of the table.. We were slow to every ball and completely outplayed by this young, inexperienced team with a young progressive coach. ( Scott Parker for Spurs anybody?) Doherty is a lost soul..totally out of his depth and dreadful crosser of the ball. Davies is boring. We desperately need 3 new full backs. Reguilon is the only decent one and he could be off. (That means 4 then!).
Lloris made some smart saves but his distribution is the worst of any Prem keeper. Out of ten …….only 4 or 5 stars out of 10 for our players tonight and zero (0) for Jose for looking so bored and glum. Scott Parker for Spurs!!! What he could do with our team.

  • TK says:

I’d take Scott Parker back in our midfield. at least the old version of the man.

  • Stan Rosenthal says:

Even though we were on the back foot for most of the game we had quite a few more clear scoring chances. But our playing out from the back was shocking with far too many balls simply being booted upfield again.. I put this down mainly to our two backs who had no idea where to put the ball in tight situations.Certainly Reg needs to replace Davies and even Aurier is an improvement on the wretched Doherty.. I also think that Lamela is an improvement on Dele who is still not doing enough in my opinion., despite the flick that led to our goal.

  • Arky says:

Again, we seem lost on how to deal with a press as a team. We have NO composure on the ball at all, none. Reciprocally we weren’t able to press Fulham at any point as a cohesive team play. What is going on ? Happy with the win though, 3 point in the bag, thrilled.

  • Niall D says:

I thought we won the 1st half, lost the 2nd.
We could’ve and should’ve been 3 up at half time a couple of great saves from their keeper kept them in the game. After 60 min (as usual) we lost our way and let them in, we brought the wrong people off and brought the wrong people on. We were back to the late December early January “Clueless” team Kane looked slow and cumbersome the whole game, and at times selfish, Doh is a lost cause. N’Dombers was anonymous for a good deal of the game.
I suppose we can’t have a great game all the time, I just don’t want us slipping back into bad habits.
    Happy for the win.
TK having actually lived here through the “troubles” and the “crap from both sides” since I was six years old. I don’t do politics m8.

  • Geofspurs says:

There was one good thing about this game …. we got three points away from home.

The bad things? It was boring. We didn’t deserve to win. We couldn’t keep the ball. We couldn’t pass the ball. We had no-one who could hold the ball up. We were not a team that looked like it knew what it was doing.

There was one good thing about this game …. we got three points away from home.

If we can’t PLAY the ball out of defence instead of just booting it as far as possible from goal (anywhere will do) it’s going to come straight back. It’s going to create pressure. This time we were lucky.

There was one good thing about this game …. we got three points away from home!

b108 …. I think Fulham were playing knock-down-ginger with our defence. (I played it often as a kid in London). : – )

AND …. there was one good thing about this game …. we got three points away from home. lol

  • Geofspurs says:

See how I tried to focus on the positive, lads? : – )

  • jod says:

Interesting game, it shows when the opposition don’t give you the time and space Burnley did then attacking gets a whole lot harder. Its fascinating how its all Docherty’s fault he couldn’t make up for the fact Bale wasn’t providing the defensive cover Son was on the other wing. Lloris could see the problem, yelling and pointing it out at one stage. Eventually Jose brought on Moura to shut it down. Attack and defence is always a balance, teams aren’t usually going to just sit back and let you go at them like Burnley. The problem for Fulham was while their pressing and build up play was excellent they don’t have a finisher. We’ll see what happens against Palace. Roy has his team well organised but they don’t have the same energy as Fulham. So we’ll see what sort of chance we can manufacture against them.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I’m gonna give some praise to Dele. I thought he played very well. And was our best player going forward. I also think he worked very hard, covered a lot of ground and was unlucky for the goal to not be credited to him. And, it does seem crazy to me that this was just his 2nd PL start since the 1st day of the season. I also thought Bale put in a good shift as well. If not an outstanding one… Understandably to me, they both faded in the 2nd half and did need substituting.

Defensively, I thought that both Toby and Sanchez had very solid games. Along with Hugo who commanded his area well, making a couple of fine saves to keep us in it.

I honestly don’t think that Spurs, as a team, played particularly badly. Just that Fulham played very well and made us work very hard for the win, putting us on the back foot for long periods. But we did do well to keep them out. And, I thought their goal was rightly disallowed. Harsh, I know…..

I actually enjoyed the game, although there was some disappointments along the way. Kane’s finishing for example. But that is not usually the case with Harry.

I’ll take the 3 points. And wish Scott and his team well. Although I can’t really see them staying up.

    Bring on the Eagles!

  • Allan says:

Not much to add that hasn’t been mentioned on previous threads .
Poor ball distribution from defence consisting of aimless long balls . Poor passing esp in the 2nd half and a general lack of cohesion when the high press is applied .
Defending like this not only puts pressure on the team but also makes the team physically tired and considering the number of matches we potentially could have before the end of the season I can see many more performances like the 2 nd half of last night .
It is not only frustrating but not an enjoyable watch esp when teams outplay us .

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Another appalling performance – the first half was Ok but the second half was as bad as anything we have seen this season. As soon as Fulham put a little bit of pressure on us we couldn’t cope. They took the ball off of us time after time, we kept giving the ball away and once again we offered no attacking threat. What goes on in our dressing room at half time I have no idea. We are lucky that Fulham had no end product, otherwise we would have lost that game. I really have no idea why Docherty still gets picked. His confidence is clearly completely shot, he can neither defend nor does he offer anything going forward. The top four is absolute fantasy. This calendar year we have beaten Leeds, West Brom, Sheff Utd and Burnley. Any vaguely difficult match we have lost, barely laying a glove on the opposition. As soon as the harder games come around we will start losing again. The manager clearly has no clue how to set a team up anymore and he is incapable of changing things when we are up against it.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

It’s pretty clear which manager gave the best half time team talk!

  • Allan says:

Didn’t take long for the optimistic of us to see our team revert to the type of display, seen in the last couple of months , which was poor to abject esp. 2nd half .
Both Bale and Dele blew hot and cold and in the case of Bale his display was quite poor hardly making any accurate passing moves ( closed down too easily ? ) Although they both combimed to create the goal we ought to have been dead and buried by a spirited Fulham who with luck and better finishing would have deservedly won .
    Neveertheless 3 more points !!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

We are gonna need a better performance to:-

    a) Score against a Woy drilled Palace defence
    b) Defend against Zaha and Eze on the ground and Benteke and Kouyate on crosses into the box.
