Match Thread – Spurs Look To Rinse & Repeat The Burnley Performance Against Fulham

|

Tottenham Hotspur will be out to prove we are back in the groove following on from the fabulous 4-0 victory over Burnley at the weekend, and we hope our next victims will be Fulham on Thursday evening.

With plenty of questions being asked about our style of play under manager Jose Mourinho, Burnley was more of a classic attacking show from us and even Gareth Bale properly clicked since his return to White Hart Lane – so everyone will be hoping for a repeat when we travel to Craven Cottage.

Unless I’ve missed something, it’ll be the same group again and players should have taken a nice boost of confidence and be relishing the opportunity to put in another performance again, but as ever, it’s down to us to perform and not let a dogged Fulham into it, as their form of late has been far better.

Another three points in this one and the battle for the European places is far from over.

Fulham

Win

Draw

Lose

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

Three other Fulham legends …. Johnny Haynes, Tony Macedo, and Jimmy Hill. Ah the memories!

Off topic again, Sorry before I write haha!

I read this morning Arseteta is whinging about the EL cup games coming up, as the situation is so unfair! Gooners wise, prior to the forthcoming NLD, Whinge they, Spurs are at home, we are away in Greece Whinge. Tough at the top mate, oh sorry your still below us, lol! COYS

It would be nice if we could help out Scotty but our club has to come first every time. If we play tonight as we did on Sunday I think we could beat anyone and I’m hoping for a comfortable win even though Fulham are unbeaten in their last 5 PL games which have all been tight affairs.

It’s going to be interesting how Jose rotates for this game, I personally think we will need our most creative players fully fit and firing on Sunday as Palace have shown yet again last night how well organised they are defensively and gave up very few good scoring opportunities to United. That said, they did look a bit jaded, Fernandes in particular but Rashford also.

    Geof.

And there was the 1966 WC winner George Cohen who was also a Fulham player.

I remember that Alf Ramsey was criticised for picking Cohen for his England WC squad, let alone as his 1st choice RB. As he was not considered to be the very best England RB to choose from , whilst playing for what was a poor and unfashionable Fulham team at the time.

Ramsey responded by saying something along the lines of; that he picked players that were best suited for his playing style and tactical, team set-up. Which didn’t necessarily mean choosing the best rated players. He was proved right of course, and Cohen was highly praised for his efforts and contribution to the WC winning team, at the time. ……………….

PY, surely your response to any WHU fan boasting about their 3 WC winners, would be to point them to the England manager, Sir Alf. He was after all a Spurs man through and through… Quite apart from the fact that it was actually England, and not really WHU that won it! 😉

Ramsey was of course partly inspired by his manager at Spurs, Arthur Rowe, and his innovative new style of “Push and Run” football… Ramsey was also a bit of an innovator himself when taking the England job. Where he did away with wingers, which was unheard of in English football in the 60’s. Something else in which he was also criticised for, by the media at the time…

So, who needs innovators and original thinkers? When a man behind a keyboard (typewriter) always seems to know much better?!

Nothing has really changed much there then, has it?……. Except that we can all now keyboard critics, experts and know-it-alls!

And I know that Spurs will win tonight.

    Fulham 0-5 Spurs!

Greaves hat-trick, and Kane with 2.

Good history lesson HT, I’ll take that result all day long. 🙂

  • Geofspurs says:

HT …. I’d forgotten Cohen. I always liked him.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    It’s funny Niall.

Just a couple of weeks ago on here, I was saying how I had lost interest in even watching Spurs play, after all the poor football and awful results of the past couple of months.

Now I’m back to predicting silly high score-lines of 5 or 6 nil and finishing in the PL top 4!

Well, even though we only won the last one 4-0, it could’ve (perhaps should’ve) been 5 or 6 to the Spurs. 🙂

And, the top 4 is now looking a lot closer than it did just a fortnight ago.

It’s been a funny ol’ season… As Greavsie might have once said to Ian St John.

RIP Saint. Both you and Greaves together, always made me smile. Just like football should.

A quick mention on Fulham years ago… was it jimmy hill as a player got the first £100pw wages? thus starting the way for modern day players mega salaries today.

What I said about smaller pitch at fulham, meant that we may not have the same wide spaces (as whl) for sonny and HK10 / bale to run into behind fulham defence. So thats why i said accurate and quick passing, with good ball control. Scott Parker said they will attack and win, as they should have won in January’s game… lovely just what we need for our counter attacks.

Hopefully fulham 0 spurs 2 (or more) COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Block, when you mentioned the small size of the pitch at the Cottage. It reminded me of Poch from a couple of seasons ago, complaining that it was the small WHL pitch that had often hampered his preferred style of football. And that it favoured some of the more defensive away teams we played.

The new ‘WHL’ pitch is a fair bit bigger. Ironically, the old WHL field, would have probably suited Mourinho’s more defensive style more than it did MP’s more expansive football. (Wenger also said something similar to MP about Highbury’s relatively small pitch).

The old WHL pitch was just a wee bit bigger than Fulham’s. And so it makes me wonder why it never seemed to hamper the great attacking Spurs players and teams of the past…

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Block. The way I remember it. Hill initially pushed hard for pro footballers not to be paid a set, maximum wage. And so be free to earn whatever a club was willing to pay them. He was responsible for the change after a few years of campaigning for this…

So yes he did set the train off on the runaway track to the incredible wages they can now earn.

But his intentions were good. In that he wanted to see players getting a fair share of the clubs high turnovers etc…. Something like that.

  • PompeyYid says:

Afternoon HT, Regards Ramsey, you are right, and I do so mention it a LOT! as him being all Spurs, thus it was Spurs teaching that won the World Cup….

What it is they, Spam fans have so few memories, its the World Cup, we won it, we won it, Bobby Moore greatest CH blah blah, its what they go on n on n on about, so its mainly what I said/wrote to counter the boring twats lol! COYS

  • PompeyYid says:

Just got an amazing surprise left at my door, answered door nobody in sight…

A framed/signed black n white picture 600 x 400 of Stevie Perryman and Ossie Ardiles holding the 1981 FA Cup in the air, I have no idea who left it, I am well choked, there are some kind hearted folk about, so a bloody MASSIVE THANK YOU to who ever did this. Come On You Spurs.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Well, they’re right about Bobby Moore. He was a fantastic player. Which is why Bill Nicholson attempted to buy him for Spurs, on more than one occasion.

  • Allan says:

It is surprising how quickly on the back of a couple of comfortable wins we are now as fans full of optimism and anticipation of a win . Long may it last and now over to you Jose !!
I just hope Mourinho will start with most of the side ( certainly the attackers ) who played on Sunday . Hopefully get a manageable lead then rest a few ready for the Palace game .

  • TK says:

Niall, I like your idea of a united Irish football team from both the south and the north of the island. Indeed, I’d like to see a united Ireland in a full sense. If the south can legalize divorce and abortion, we know the church no longer rules the culture., so we can get begin to get beyond the insane religious divisions of centuries past. Let the divisions heal, have the north and south unite in mutual Irish state that stays in Europe and grows to outstrip England economically. Let the oppressed unite and Irish love prevail. (My father’s family was Irish, and my dad married an Englishwoman from London. The two sides of the family were constantly at war with one another. Insanely stupid. I’ve dreamt of a different future since I was a wee lad.) One Ireland finally. In football and in spirit. Enough is enough of the artificial divisions history imposed on us. I loved both of my grandfathers and cried that they couldn’t get past the past. Human stupidity.

  • Geofspurs says:

b108/HT …. That’s why I said Hill was a legend, not because he was a great player. He should probably be a legend for every club because of what he achieved for every player. Not sure that he expected some of them to earn the obscene amount of money they do today!!!

  • Geofspurs says:

PY …. I just checked the front door and guess what I got …. bugger all!! : – )

    • PompeyYid says:

Geof, I can take having the piss taken, carry on if it makes you feel better lol!

Am just trying to work out who has/would do/done such a kind thing. COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Well I didn’t have to wait long to see the “killer” attacking line-up that I was asking for just a couple of days ago.

With Ndombele, Dele, Son, Bale and Kane all starting…

    Come on You Spurs!

  • Allan says:

Dele’s big chance to make an impression from the start . Let’s hope he can take it .

  • block 108 spurs says:

Geof.. you were experiencing knock down ginger.. remember from your days as a youngster in London? lol

A strong team again v fulham, i am looking forward to seeing spurs wining and a clean sheet for Lloris.
