Match Thread – Spurs Look To Get Back On Track As We Welcome Villa To Our Home

|

Well, it’s that time of the week again where Tottenham Hotspur fans turn their attentions back to our stuttering Premier League campaign.

With a flying start under new head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, performances were still a worry and we are now on a run of three straight (heavy) losses. Welcoming improved Aston Villa to White Hart Lane for Sunday’s afternoon action is not going to be an easy task with the Midlands side having secured back to back victories over Everton and Manchester United.

However, with a much improved showing in the midweek Europa Conference League clash with NS Mura, we should come into the tie with renewed confidence – particularly so for Harry Kane following his hattrick on Thursday evening.

In advance of proper team news, we should be largely as we were, as it’s not expected that Steven Bergwijn will return for this one, but Ben Davies is also likely out having missed the midweek game with suspected appendicitis.

We have the quality for all three points here, we just have to hope we turn up.

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

music congolese from 40 years ago, can’t be beat. lol
almost like Homer and Plato. lol

give it a listen, niall. geof, too. oh heck, everyone else, too. If you don’t like it I don’t want to hear from you. lol

  • Niall D says:

The music may not be my taste, but it takes me somewhere, warm and sunny with a cool beer and a good view. See, what I mean is that there seemed to be a greater wealth of talent all round in out day.
From trying to copy Cruyff turns, Pele bicycle kicks, Bruce Lee flying kicks, Hendricks /Clapton guitar riffs, what is there now??
    C rap. And little else.

    Seems to me ….
A sportsperson can only be judged on how the sport was played in his/her particular era.
A singer or musician can be compared across all era’s.
I much prefer the philosophy of C.R. Higgins than Plato or Socrates. It’s more ‘today’.

  • Geofspurs says:

ND … There is Eva Cassidy, mate.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Yes, but she left us far too soon Geof. 🙁

Harry must have been frustrated at not having the opportunity to add to his England goals tally last night, even 20 or so minutes might have been enough to add 1 or 2.

    • Geofspurs says:

Hi TQ … My thoughts exactly, on both counts.

Should be a goal-fest for Chelsea tonight. And can Spurs keep it going? I’m expecting a good game in this one.

      • TQ2Spurs says:

Hi Geof, yes Leicester are still trying to find their feet in the WSL and like ourselves will need to look to stay up while improving the quality of their squad.

I’m looking forward to our game at Brighton, they started really well under Hope Powell but their form has dropped a little of late. This is going to be a good test of our ability to maybe get 4th or 5th place at the end of the season which would be a fantastic outcome. Still waiting to see our new Aussie striker!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Always seems to happen to us doesn’t it, we face Newcastle who will no doubt be on a bounce from the takeover by the Saudi’s. We can only hope that it actually unsettles them, with Steve Bruce possibly going before the game, and many players wondering what future they will have there.

  • Geofspurs says:

Maybe we need a sugar (oil) daddy after all! If you can’t beat them …..

  • PompeyYid says:

Having now got over the Prem lge & FA allowing a “Saudi dirty money” company buy out NFC, I have a couple of questions for all you die hard Spurs fans…..

Would/could you still support our beloved Spurs if it was to happen to us? mind highly unlikely as we are Yids!

Or would you turn a blind eye?

My answer is NO! I do have morals, if that is the correct word!

  • Geofspurs says:

PY …. These days, morals and anything to do with money are not mutually inclusive words in any sentence. Sad but true.

    • PompeyYid says:

Geofspurs….I couldn’t agree with you any more, but for me if a “dirty money” Arab where take over/buy out Spurs I would drop supporting Spurs like a hot brick, that’s sad but true.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Geof…..didn’t quite get your goalfest, Leicester put in a good performance to keep Chelsea in check until late on in the game.

Same old story for us in the first half, loads of possession in their half but poor final passes and again no goal threat other than Graham. Don’t know what on earth has happened to our new Aussie striker, seems she has been injured since she arrived apart from a few minutes in one game.

  • TK says:

So the human race is well on the road to extinctuion because of petroleum pollution and some people want THFC to be bought by war-criminal Saudi oil money? No thanks, mates. I’d far prefer relegation to having our soul bought. A few trophies are not worth thagt.

  • Geofspurs says:

TQ …. I was expecting Kerr to score 4 or 5. But the main stars were on the bench until HT due to their midweek CL game. Makes sense, I guess.

I thought Spurs played well considering they finished a player down. They didn’t give up. They lost the game but finished ahead in terms of all the stats, and that didn’t happen often last season. It’s obviously not as good as winning but does indicate improvement. I agree about the final passes but I think they will improve in the final third of the pitch as the season goes on. The main thing for Spurs at this stage is to keep steadily progressing in the right direction. I think they are.

    • TQ2Spurs says:

Geof….that’s what I found frustrating, Brighton weren’t that good, we were by far the better team but failed to convert our dominance into goals as is nearly always the case. We really need a Fran Kirby and a Sam Kerr!

Strange Sunday morning here in NYC, were I am for a few weeks. I’m watching Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium on the tellie as I write, but not football. Only the atrocious NY Jets American football team. There are two NFL teams that use the name New York, but neither of them play in NY. both play their “home” matches in New Jersey. I’m not sure which team is the home team in the match in N17 today. Stadium looks nice in the few shots that show more than the artificial turf field.

    • PompeyYid says:

TK…I watched the last quarter, about an hr lol! I cannot for the life of me make hare nor tail of that game, but did enjoy the sounds and lay out of our Magnificent Stadium. COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I see Lo Celso put in another match winning performance for Argentina last night with two assists and six key passes. We all complain about Eriksen not being replaced when in fact we have a guy who can at least go some way towards doing so but for some reason doesn’t get the opportunity.

Why is it we don’t give him a run of games and are we not playing him in his best position?

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

TQ2Spurs – Le Celso also played the whole 90 minutes which in my opinion is equally important as his fine performance.

  • wentworth says:

Lo Celso has played in 51 Prem games, scored one goal and a very few assists. There is a strange mismatch here which is puzzling. He is very one footed which cramps his style and spends lots of time falling over.
He seems not to be fitted to the English/Spurs way of playing whis is amystery but not uncommon.
We desperately need that Eriksen replacement. Someone who can pinpoint passes, control the midfield, take set pieces and score goals.
Maybe Lo Celso will come good for some of the needs but his cv does not cover what we really need.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Quite right DH, more than some can manage!

I understand Lo Celso played on the left of a 3 in a 4231 formation, we all know this is Son’s best position so maybe this is why we don’t give him a go there. I don’t see why we can’t give this formation a go as so many of the squad are familiar with it from Poch’s days and we have Hojbjerg and Skipp for the 2, we could play Son and Kane in the 9 and 10 positions, whichever way round you fancy, or even swap during the games to confuse the opposition?

  • TQ2Spurs says:

We know you’re not his number one fan WW but you have to acknowledge the fact he performs consistently well for Argentina and question why we have only really seen one performance of a similar standard in a Spurs shirt. He clearly has the skills, so how come we aren’t seeing the same level of performance in club games? For me it it has to be down to his club manager failing to use him to best effect tactically and/or positionally. To be fair…he also doesn’t score many goals internationally but he does create lots of opportunities for others.

  • BelgianSpur says:

I was a huge fan of Eriksen but I’ll be the first to say he didn’t score very often either. If Lo Celso can set up Kane, Son and others more often than not, he doesn’t need to be scoring himself. I still think there’s a useful player in there, and it’s up to the Spurs manager to get the best out of him.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

WW….I don’t think Eriksen ever controlled the midfield in the way Modric did for example, he was excellent at set pieces, and could pull off some sublime through balls, but he couldn’t be desribed as a ‘midfield general’ in my opinion. He was never the strongest of tacklers.
